As for hip score, I discussed this with my vet last year because I wanted to give my little babies a couple of litters each (to cool them down), even if the parents are hip-scored, it doesnt mean the puppies will be clear.... and vice-a-versa... I have since then contacted 3 other vets regarding this, and all have said exactly the same. Hip-scoring doesnt prove anything.
Sorry to go off-topic, but it's not necessary to let you dogs have litters to 'cool them down' - if everyone did that it would only exacerbate the rescue dog problem. Much more effective to have your dog spayed or neutered. :)

Although the hip-scoring does not guarantee that any progeny will be free of developmental hip problems, it is an inherited problem, and therefore it is recommended by both the BVA and the Kennel Club (and is also a requirement of the Kennel Club if you are an accredited breeder). To disregard them, and simply go on how a dog lies is a bit naive - I knew a lab who laid as you describe, and he had awful hip problems!

Instead of buying from a 'loving home' you are far better doing your research and buying from a reputable breeder. :)

If you look on the rescue dog sites, they are mostly breeders that have been throwing puppies out untill they are too old and the breeders do not want them anymore. That is what I call really sad!!! I looked through some of the sites on the links above, I got so upset.... its awfull..
I didnt mean it in a nasty way, we absoluetly adore our babies
I agree with you saying that this does exacerbate rescue dog problems, one rule I set out to everybody who's taken a puppy from me is that if they cant cope, or if something changes in their circumstances, they bring the little puppies/ dogs back to me... I will not allow any of my babies to be sent into rescue centres... I phone the new owner's often and keep intouch with all of them... I have one here now, the owner is in hospital, she's been back with me for 3 months..... once he's home and well, she'll be going home.

Labs do need a lot of mental stimulation, they love to please.. especially if you have a pocket full of treats!!!!!!!!!!! :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Do you want the ultimate compromise, this is Luke, he's a labrador and springer cross!!! His Mam was a black labrador, his Dad was a brown and white spaniel and this is how he turned out.

Only kidding, he's mine and even if he's chaos I wouldn't be able to part with him. He was only 6 months old then, was the day we went to get him as he was going to be PTS, doesn't look much different now.

He has the appetite of a labrador and the energy/bounce of a springer! He can run for miles, he doesn't get tired out, ever, he loves water, he eats like a pig, steals anything he can like socks etc, and boy can he jump! Clears 8ft fences without a problem.

    Awwwwwwwwwww he looks adorable

It's great that you are in contact with all your puppies owners and will take them back if ever their new owners can't look after them. But in addition to the puppy farm rescue dogs from places like Many Tears in Wales, there are many many dogs from other rescues who are the result of 'just one litter' or from dogs whose owners were not responsible enough to neuter their pets, and allowed them to reproduce, and even pure bred (and pedigree) dogs.

I know that you didn't mean it in a nasty way, but people really must stop and think before they attempt to breed their pet, and ask themsleves why they're doing it, if they have the knowledge and dedication to do so. It is not necessary for !!!!!es to have a litter before they are spayed, or for their mental well being, or to cool them down. It is much better for the welfare of your dog, and for the whole dog population to have them spayed/neutered. :)

I do look on the rescue sites, and indeed my own dog came from a rescue center. She has a very pronounced undershot jaw, and a poorly docked tail - obviously who over owned her parents (and I hesitate to call them breeders) did not care about the conformation or welfare of their puppies.

awwwwwwwwww poor love, I bet she's adorable

I have a miss matched coloured Lab, she's fox red yellow and has a black spot on the head..... she's absolutely crazy, but sooooooo adorable... Someone offered me a lot of money for her, but I told him he could offer me £10,000 for her, I would never sell her.. its just sooooooo unusual, I shall sort out a picture and put it on here, as its a chance in 1.2 million (I think I read on the net) to have a miss matched coloured lab..
  • can anyone tell me how do I attach a picture in this forum??

Forget Labs and springers, they are both brilliant gundogs, take nothing from them, nothing wrong with either.... from the 2 breeds ...i'd go for a lab.......but myself.....i'd recommend a vizsla, not too large, all the intelligence of a lab and more , and probably the same energy level of a nutty springer!!! sometimes.. what a dog!!!! no other breed will do for me!!!!

Well on the 2nd Jan we had a new family member arrive and she's a............Springer Spaniel:D .
Her name is Bella and she is approx 11 weeks old now.
She gets her 2nd jab tomorrow and is also being microchipped as well.
We are counting the days till we can take her out.
We found her on the net and in the end the place we got her from was well 'dodgy' (mum wasn't there, she was riddled with fleas) but we couldn't leave her once we saw her.
We took her straight to the vets and the vet said she was fine which was a relief.Fleas were gone in 2 days and she has been wormed twice now and all is well.
Toilet training is going very well and she is fine with her crate at night.
She has blended in very well with our family and its as if she has always been with us.
My autistic son thinks she is fantastic and is being very good with her.
Sadly my dad passed away on Dec 20th and getting Bella has been very good for me as she is keeping me occupied which i need right now.
I haven't a clue how to post a pic but she is liver and white and a real cutie.

Great Choice...I loved my dear katie who sadly was put to sleep in Sept age 12, She had hip displacer (sorry cant spell it ) we found out when she was about 14mths old,We bought her private from a family who was bored with her,she was so frightened, she went to bite my son (then age 4) but I "clicked" with this dog I knew she was special and wanted love....She was my best friend, yes mad mad and bags of energy my vet said I have 2 choices either limit her walks dont let her off the lead let her have a long life OR let her run free and short life, well I think she done well for 12, she got tired after about 1 and I had to say enough,
My husky misses her lots...But we looked at loads of rescues so so sad how humans treat these poor loyal, loving animals,
We now have 12 wk old german shepard cross golden retriever....
Sure Bella will bring lots of fun..enjoy her... and please please get her spayed
