Do I HAVE to have underlay?

There's quite a lot of info here on whether you need underlay and which one might be best http://www.underlay4u.co.uk/blog/2018/02/15/underlay-faq/0

Well the last carpet I removed looked fairly reasonable after 20 years of not an awful lot of wear. As for the underlay, turned to dust! I do mean that literally, but it was cheap & probably explains why you could see every floorboard in the carpet.0

I also have an old carpet and it looks in great nik. The patternis horrible and too dark for me but probably cost a lot of money at the time. Probably carpets were made to a higher standard in them days too.0
