Do I HAVE to have underlay?

    Well the last carpet I removed looked fairly reasonable after 20 years of not an awful lot of wear. As for the underlay, turned to dust! I do mean that literally, but it was cheap & probably explains why you could see every floorboard in the carpet.

    I also have an old carpet and it looks in great nik. The patternis horrible and too dark for me but probably cost a lot of money at the time. Probably carpets were made to a higher standard in them days too.
