Do I HAVE to have underlay?

Sorry, couldn't find anywhere more appropriate to put this, but I am trying to save money.
The thing is, I want to replace my stair carpet. But the shop won't sell me any without underlay. The salesman said I HAVE to have underlay and they are not allowed to sell carpet without it.
Are they having me on, or is this some weird rule? With underlay it'll almost double the cost.

No weird rule that I know of........
However the underlay will disguise the cheap crappy carpet they are selling you.
I would take my business elsewhere.

make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • Well you don't have to have underlay (or carpet) from that shop.

.......but as others have said it would be a very good idea to have underlay under your stair carpet.

Are they fitting it for you? If so they have every right to refuse to sell to you as you have to buy from them. They are probably protecting themselves against complaints when the carpet doesn't last as long as advertised.

They can sell to you - or not - under whatever terms they want. They don't have to sell to you at all if they don't want to. Up to them.

I think people are trying to save 'granny's money'.

The stair carpet wouldn't last long without underlay.

As has been said above you really do need underlay to extend the life of your carpet / keep noise down / have comfy feet.

I've been advised by someone who seemed to know what he was on about that its advisable to get a better quality underlay / lower quality carpet than the other way round.

I usually tell whoever is supplying my carpet that I will be supplying my own underlay. (I've never had an issue with this but if they aren't happy about this then shop elsewhere).

Next buy underlay yourself - Its not that expensive once the carpet suppliers mark up has been taken out of the equation. https://www.carpet-underlay-shop.co.uk/collections/black-friday

The carpet fitting cost should already factor in laying the underlay so shouldn't affect that.

    Job done.

I would take my business elsewhere. Definitely shouldn't NEED to buy underlay with carpet at the shop. Especially when you can get it much cheaper online.
