I agree but having big issue with my bank at the moment.

I have always used Internet Banking despite the SSL not being secure, however, their mobile app has been dire.

The first one I installed a few years ago relied on iPhone security once installed, it only asked me for the three levels of authentication I get online when I first installed it. So I got rid of that.

Recently I was told it had been rewritten but now find they have updated up to support something called "Open Banking".

The idea of this terrifies me, the very LAST thing I want is for my banking to be open.

    https://www.openbanking.org.uk/home/what-is-open-banking/

They said that it is no different to Paypal but I disagreed, to me, my internet banking is a tool for me to view my banking and with the appropriate device to make payments within the banks IT system.

This new functionality appears to be a payment system, which I do not want or need as well as opening up my bank account to a load of companies (perhaps explicitly) that I do not trust

It seems to me that this Open Banking should be a separate app, this would allow me to NOT install it as I do not want to install any App with this ability because I simply do not trust the technology, the companies or the Government who initiated the idea.

I feel I will be deprived of using internet banking app if I have to have this system installed (which I do not need or want).

I want to have my internet banking without this back door to my bank account, I do not care about the so called benefits, I will never want it.

Am I being paranoid or just properly security conscious?

Iv got to ask - who do you bank with as there is no way i would want that crap

2 years ago, I let my previous neighbour into my WiFi: my router reaches next door quite well. He turned out to be a ratbag in many ways, including 'doing a moonlight' and selling off most of the furniture, TV and HiFi bought for him by his partner. He also downloaded so much stuff, after he had just asked for enough to run FB, that I changed both passwords and shut him off. He became irate, so I worked how much he had used and presented him with a bill. We learned later that this bloke was a serial 'leaver', having left a wife and family in one place and another partner with children at another. I sincerely hope that he has a very bad end someday.

His partner had to go see her sick mum miles away for a week. In that week he emptied the house and moved (he said) to North Wales. Unfortunately, the Hire van he used to take away what was left, at 3 am, had a "Rutland" address. His partner was devastated and we had no number for her. My own Data limit seemed insignificant compared to her problems. However, I will never do that again. Now we have a lovely neighbour who helps us with many things.

The ratbag is still being pursued through the courts by our landlord for criminal damage and non payment of rent. We may see him on "Can't Pay-" someday.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

Until fairly recently my wifi network was open and unsecured, so anyone that visited could log on without needing a password.
I had unlimited data usage so wasn't too bothered about extra usage.
I see wifi as a commodity similar to milk and sugar and I would happily lend these to neighbours in need.

That's like giving someone you don't know a pile of used paper with some of it being bank statements and other sensitive documents because they need some paper to make notes on.

That seem's mean to give them milk and not let them use it and having to return it all back you :rotfl:

Its not about the extra usage , Its about the security of your own data ..
Do remember that it's not just your friends who you invite in for a cup of tea who will have had access to this ..

People actually drive around neighbourhoods with modified pringle cans used as directional antennas connected to their laptops looking for setups just like yours.

    It is called wardriving

Once they find one, they use it for whatever illegal purpose they need and are therefore completely untraceable ..
Think of the likes of kiddie pron etc :(

Yep, it's actually scary how gullible people can be. They think that just because they wouldn't do something bad that nobody else possibly could. Welcome to the real world.

I would let a neighbour use mine and have let several do so for free, however, not to the ISP router, but to my cable router which has a facility for a guest network, on which it offers parental controls which I set to most secure. It also created logs so in the even that they used a VPN to access ISIS I would have logs to show exactly which user did it.

As most people do not have such kit, think twice, if this person accesses dark web and the worst thing you can imagine, well that is going to link back to your account and your ISP will give them your details.

If you have a neighbour who needs wifi, have them look for BT Fon, Virgin or Sky Cloud.

If you are with one of these providers you can share without being responsible for what they do.

If they say they can't receive signal tell them to get an AC router off eBay and boost it to their premises.

It's a sad day when people expect the worst.
Sometimes I leave an upstairs window open but I don't assume everyone is walking around with a ladder looking to gain entry to steal things.
Sometimes I leave my car unlocked but I don't assume everyone is looking for the chance to open the door and rake through my glove compartment.
    I could go on.

Pramsay - having an unsecured router is pretty much like leaving your front door unlocked all the time whether you are there or not - with a big sign saying please help yourself - do a seaqrch for nearby wifi and see what you find. You may live in an area where all folks are decent and honest, but most of us don't.

Its not just about using your data, it's also about what an unknown user is using your wifi for. In our house, friends and family can log on to our wifi with our password, but I wouldn't let some stranger walking past the house do it. If you get a call from PC plod saying we've detected you downloading pirate movies, illegal !!!!!!, or worse, then you'd have trouble proving it wasn't you if it all went through your router which is inside your house. Plus, we should all try and keep scum bags from evading detection on the internet.

This isn't about people expecting the worst. This is about taking basic security precautions.

So why don't you leave your downstairs windows open or leave your front door unlocked?. Would you be happy to let someone you didn't know look through your phone or PC unsupervised?.
