Cleaning wiper blades

Options
Hi guys,

As above. What is it you have to do to your blades to stop them marking? Atm, even with clean glass, RainX'd etc. and Bosch blades less than 3 months old, I'm still getting marks! It's not the screen wash, that's fine - Autoglym. It's got to be the blades.

Isn't there something you can apply to them to stop them doing it, fairy liquid did I read somewhere?

Thanks.

You need to clarify what marks you are on about.
All I'm seeing is brand names, rain x perhaps is your problem, as clean glass will repel water even at low speeds.
  • Thanks for the reply! Yeah, basically after the wiper has done its thing, there are marks left across the screens - almost as if there's something pulling on the blade when it's wiping? I've run a damp cloth across them but it doesn't appear to have made any difference. Thinking I need to try something a little bit stronger?

You need to remove the rain x and your problem solved.

I've learnt the hard way not to put Rain X on the front windscreen. :o

It's great on the side windows and rear windscreen.

I've used Rainex for years, in fact I applied some just this evening to both cars.

It is applied to reduce the need for wipers, but has to be done properly. It is the dirt on windscreens which causes the water to cover the screen rather than bead, so you need continual wipers.

Clean the screen, apply, leave to dry, wipe over with a cloth, apply again, leave and wipe off.

Once done this way I hardly have to use wipers at all. Motorway driving is a dream, the water just flies off and intermittent wipe is more than adequate even in a downpour.

If you use the wipers as you would do without it you are working against what it is designed to do and it will streak.

Yep many users have streaking after misapplying rain-x, however a good glass polish will give the same beading effect .

Are they a decent set of wiper blades? ie, not a set of Michelin ones from Poundland?

I seem to remember an invention on Dragons Den that was like a razor and peeled a thin strip off the worn wiper blades to make them like new ones. Didn't get any backing though!

If you have wiper blades that stutter or squeak in one direction it can be caused by the angle the blades meet the screen. Gently twisting the wiper arm will correct it.
