Air Con issue on VW approved used Das welt POLO
I bought a used VW polo from a VW dealership last month. When I picked it up there was snow on the ground (Beast from the East).
Last week during the first warm weather I switched on the air conditioning for the first time and all it did was blow out warm air. There is obviously an issue with the air con. It could just need regassing or it might be a more serious and costly problem such as the compressor etc.
All Das Welt cars come with a 12 month warranty so I should be covered but looking at the small print it states that problems prior to start of cover are not covered.
I am going to contact the dealership tomorrow but any contributors have any thoughts and advice on how to tackle this. The way I see it either the fault was on the car when I bought it and therefore it was not as described or it has developed since and should be covered by the warranty. Either way, I am really angry and I would like to get them to fix it at no cost to me. Is this likely?
Another issue is the dealership is not that local to me (about 40 miles away). So If they need to keep the car I think I am due a courtesy car at the very least.
I have only driven about 200 miles since owning the car and part of the reason that I went to a dealership and paid dealership prices is for the peace of mind.
All approved VW cars are supposed to have a 142 point check prior to sale. Luckily I have a copy as I requested one during the sale and it says the air con was operating correctly at the time of check. The check was carried out in Oct 2017 so they must have been trying to sell this car for a while. It is making me doubt what else has been checked as ok.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I suggest you wait and see what VW comes back with. As you mentioned it is an approved used car so things like aircon should be operating correctly and if not I thin it would be covered by their warranty.0

If its not covered by the warranty it will be covered by the dealer. Thats a bunfight for the VW AUC warranty company and the dealer to have - nothing you need to worry about. The clause about pre-existing faults is to stop an unscrupulous dealer selling a car with a known fault - say a dodgy gearbox - and then having the customer get the warranty company to repair it a week later.
Ring your dealer up get the car booked in and sit back and relax. Not your problem.0 -
You've got yourself well and truly worked up over such a small thing you haven't even spoken to the dealer about yet!!!
What age is the car0 -
If the car has been sat for a few months it's not inconceivable a seal has dried out and the system has leaked. Should be easy enough to diagnose with a bit of dye and a regas.
No need to be 'really angry', just let the dealer fix it.0 -

Does any one know approx. how much this would cost to fix as I have the exact same issue (though not covered by warranty and a different make/model ((Honda)). My AC has never worked since I bought it 2 yrs ago though AC compressor comes on-
I think a regas and dye check is around £40-£50 but if it is dried up seals, what sort of cost are we looking at? Just need a rough idea.
Thanks0 -
Impossible to say given how many components there are and how many seals it could be.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

The golden rule for AC systems is to keep them switched on all year round.0

It is a 64 (2014).
I realise that it might look like a small thing but I parted with a lot of cash and in my opinion, they should have rechecked the car prior to me picking it up to make sure everthing was functioning properly. Especially as it looks like the car was standing for a few months.
I don't think I am being unreasonable.0 -
No one is saying unreasonable, just no need to panic, call the dealer. see what they say, if they tell you its not their problem then come back and tell us what they say,

A diagnostic would cost £50-£75, but until we know the fault no one can give you a price to fix it.We may not win by protesting, but if we don’t protest we will lose.
