Ah, yes, I remember, things were different in the past - all the rented social housing was sold back then!

Housing has been messed up since RTB, but its an apathetic cop out to just declare that a change of government makes no difference.

Ask a few people with disabilities who can't work, ask a few NHS staff, ask one of the Windrush children, ask a prison officer if a change of government makes any difference!

Yes, and who got us in this mess in the first place? (FYI, the decision to throw away the Windrush landing cards was made in 2009 - under a Labour Government).

If I was apathetic, I wouldn't vote. I do vote (and not always for the same party), but from years of experience, I don't hold out much hope that once in, the politicians will do what they said during the campaigning.

    Tories, one way or another.

That decision wasn't a government decision anyway, was it? The 'hostile environment' and using NHS staff, employers and landlords as border agents was, and also time did not begin in 1997!

I must admit Corbyns supposed statement that if Labour was voted in, RTB would be ended is almost (but not quite, I am not financially suicidal) enough to make me prepared to vote for them. If only there weren't the rest of the mayhem that goes with them lol.

However having seen other 'promises' made by various parties be whittled down to nothing in practical terms.., it does make you wonder what is the point in voting at all. I agree with another poster, it doesn't make much difference which party is in. You won't get what you think you are getting, and up until now, there is little difference between them.

However, I think this thread is on the wrong board lolol, its a bit more inevitably political than appropriate for this board.

But back to the original theme, I definitely agree that expecting people bidding for a property to make it a BTL stand aside for someone who wants to live in the property is not practical. And how would you locate the other person? People hardly walk in with 'BTLer' or 'wanting to live in it' labels. You go to an auction, you takes your chance.

I think RTB did serve a purpose originally, it did give people some mobility. But there did come a time when it was more of a problem than a bonus, and it should have been stopped then. But very few people in government actually care about long term problems. Some do, but not enough.

I think its not enough to blame the party that was in place when a change was made.., if another party has since been in place, they COULD have changed things. Problem is, Blair government policies were so similar to the Tories, it was never going to happen. That was the problem.

If I was a Government minister.

Next tax idea should be "flippers'" profits get added to income and taxed under their Schedule D or Schedule E status; rather than allowed against annual capital gains tax exemption.

As it stands, only those HMRC can bag as professional property developers come under this category, so God knows how many flippers aren't having to pay tax on their gains.

    Mayhem?

Have you been to A&E the last couple of winters? Have you been to Liverpool prison? That's mayhem!

If in doubt, blame the Tories.

    - RTB

+ Anti-landlord (SDLT surcharge, reduced mortgage interest relief, PRA changes).

I was a lifelong Conservative voter until 24/6/16.

I know this sounds like a cop-out but I didn't see the reveal on that one, as I was in the shower!

I was only half watching after that, but I'm pretty sure another couple who bought a property said it would be their third investment as they already had another one "plus the man's mother's house which she bought off the council a few years ago and she has now died". Yet another example of everything that's wrong with the system.

The final couple were lovely, they were looking for somewhere to retire to, bid for and won their perfect house in one of their dream locations, and were moving in pretty much immediately, buying just a bed to begin with but putting their old house on the market and moving in properly as soon as it was sold. More like that please!

That was the man who bought the ex council house in Northumberland. I think whoever used right to buy on that house did the council a favour it must be a nightmare to manage the houses on that estate. A block of flats would be much easier.

Would you want to live on a council estate where the properties only fetched £27k at auction? You can guess what that estate is like from the price the property made. The best thing that can happen to that estate for the council is that they sell all the houses off and start again with flats which will at least be easier to manage.
