i cannot believe you sent the phone in the first place to be honest. It is obvious that the guy is scamming people the differing details alone should have alerted you to this. Even if the funds clear in paypal and its send recorded you will still lose your money if as it seems the transaction is fraudulent and sending to a unconfirmed address you have no protection at all so you would lose any claimback.

I have a similar problem to this. On 8 January I sold an item on ebay, that was immediately paid for through PayPal. I emailed my address details as the item was 'Buyer Collects' being a piece of furniture. The buyer contacted me a couple of times in the next two weeks to say that she was trying to arrange transport. However despite mwe sending emails, I have not heard anything from her for the past two weeks. I contacted ebay for her details and telephoned the number given. I spoke to a man who said that the buyer had moved out last July and added that she was still giving out the same telephone number and that the address I confirmed from details on PayPal was the address where he now lived.

As ebay cannot/will not advise, does anyone have any suggestions. I have her money, the piece of furniture and very little room to get out of the front door. Should I relist the item. Dispose of it, or do I have to keep it for the forseeable future:confused:

Wearside, I think the protocol for picked up items is cash only at time of pick up .

So I think I am correct in saying, to refund the money via paypal, give a couple of days to pick up and if it does not happen go for the fees and relist

wearside, mah-jong is quite right, never ever use paypal for a collected item. Refund the money and relist the item.

Read post 16 on the sticky thread entitled helpful hints and make sure you follow the check list to stay safe with paypal.

refund now, or lose out when buyer starts a dispute.

just coz the money 'cleared' doesnt mean its actually yours... the buyer can recall it back with paypal for up to 45 days or whatever it is now. and even after that date all they need to do is go to their bank claiming fraud and it'l be reversed...

RD for a NEW phone? what was it worth? £2.50?
  • i had a similar problem, sold item, buyer paid for it,i sent it off,3 weeks went by then it returned to my address,so i had the payment and the item,at first i thought relist and keep the money incase of dispute. but i contacted the buyer it had happened they had moved house and forgot to change ebay details,so thought they were out of luck and had lost the item and thier money completly and didnt want the embarresement of emailing me this.
he then changed his details and i posted off to his new address, got great feedback for this one.

Thanks for the information. I sold three items all on the same day, all were 'Pick Ups'. I gave the choice of, PayPal, Cash, Cheque or Postal order. Two paid by PayPal (including the non collection), and one paid in cash when they came to the door. I am in contact with ebay regarding the outstanding transaction, who are attempting to contact the Buyer. What they have not done, is advised me what to do!

How do I find the sticky thread:confused:

To me this sounds like someones using a dodgy Paypal account (stolend details or credit card fraud) and someones not noticed. It would be very bizarre for someone to be not that bothered about spending money on a phone then asking for it to goto some address they don't even have on file on Paypal.
  • update for my case (OP):

Royal mail returned the phone. I relisted it and sold it for the same price.
Eventually the first buyer got in touch. Apparantly they had sold theirs but then it broke before they sent to their buyer so were getting me to send to their buyer directly. In the end they refunded their buyer due to the delay hence it wasn't collected. Anyway I gave the buyer a refund and everyone was square in the end.
