Affordable place to live between York & Leeds?

Are there areas of York to strictly avoid at all costs? For example I think I read somewhere Tang Hall and Dringhouses have a bad reputation?
Add Clifton and Chapelfields as places that are a rough.
Have you considered somewhere along the A19 south of York? Like Barlby?0 -
Hi
Yes I'd avoid Acomb, it does have nice parts but the houses within your price range are in areas that are not so nice. The Knapton side is nice but would be higher prices.
Again Tang Hall area does have nice areas but towards the Heworth end. Some villages towards Selby are lovely e.g. Riccall, Cawood, Bubwith and might be an affordable alternative to York.
The areas in York I would look at are Huntington, Strensall, haxby and Wiggington. They all have great bus services into the city but might be out of your price range.
I hope this helps xx0 -
You see, that's why I mentioned Acomb and New Earswick because although there are undoubtedly more refined places to live around York, if they are out of the price bracket, they aren't much help to the OP are they? (Agree that Wigginton is a good place to look, by the way). Anywhere on that bus route really- think it's the no. 1 bus leaving York centre via Gillygate.0

Well I suppose it depends on how rough is being used...rough as in the opposite of posh? Or rough as in the opposite of safe?
By the way I really appreciate all of the answers, helps a lot.0 -

Whilst I understand other areas are outside the price bracket I would not be happy to suggest buying somewhere not that nice to live either.0 -

A bit of both. Not as bad in anyway as big cities like Leeds, or Manchester and you are more likely to get your car stolen, or your house broken into than assaulted.
Friend lives in Acomb. Got some nice new gates for her garden. Came back from work the next day and they had been stolen. Admittedly the area is on the up and things do seem to be getting better. I was there yesterday actually and I even saw houses with solar panels so people are taking care and making improvements which is a good sign. It is a shame as there are some really nice houses in the area and it is close to York.
By the way suggestions were made for Cawood and Barbly - both of these areas flood (Cawood badly). For York you need to check the flood maps before buying anywhere.0 -

We currently live in a less than posh area of Leeds, but we've never been a victim of crime and certainly don't want to a buy into an area where the chances are higher than normal. Understand completely about the flood risks, will be keeping an eye on flood maps.
I don't suppose you're familiar with Ostman Road which is in the more northern bit of Acomb? There's a potential house there that's in budget and ticks the boxes (minus being right in front of two schools but hey ho...), I'm wondering if that bit of Acomb is any better.0 -
Nowt wrong with many parts of Acomb. I think you'd struggle budget wise in New Earswick and houses are few and far between but it's lovely. Haxby and Wiggington or Strensall will come in cheaper than York proper.Officially in a clique of idiots0

If you can go to £180k then you could look at Harrogate.

Ostman road is ok, as is the big estate at dringhouses (chaloners road area). I'd avoid Chapelfields and the bit of foxwood inside the bellhouse way horseshoe but outside is ok. I'd also avoid tudor road, Kingsway west.Officially in a clique of idiots0
