Would you rent next door to a car mechanics?

We've seen a house we'd like to rent, it's an end of terrace but behind the house there is a car mechanic/MOT test centre. The access to this is down a slip road to the side of the house, which opens up onto a garage area. I'm concerned about the noise it would generate and if there'd constantly be engine fumes etc. Obviously there'd also be cars going in and out all day too. We can only view the house at the weekend so i don't think we'd get the full picture. Does anyone else live near something similar and have any problems?

Depends on what hours you (and they) keep. If you're out at work when they're doing their banging and revving it's not much of an issue. But I'd look elsewhere if I were hoping for some peace and quiet.

Does that mean you can only get there at weekends or you're only allowed to?

Alternatively, you could phone the garage to have a chat with them and ask a few questions.

It means we can only do viewings at the weekend at the moment, rather than not being allowed to go during the week. This is our second move in six months (first landlord selling up) so used up quite a bit of holiday with the first one. We've got a couple of months to look so will start using afternoons etc when it gets a bit more urgent!

It'd not be top of my list.
There are noise/fumes during business hours ... but lots of loud chaps shouting to each other, having a laugh with each other and customers, customers shouting across the yard in jollity. Then machinery and banging and hollering back/forth with banksmen/similar.... and all sorts of "general industriously employed people" noise enjoying a day's work and banter.

Also, machinery such as air compressors etc can make a lot of noise, including first thing in the morning when first fired up when you're just turning over for a bit of a lie-in. They can be thumpers, depending on location/age/type.

Then, after hours ... would it be a potential target for feral types after the perceived goodies within.

Completely my thoughts! We work during normal business hours but noticed they're open on a Saturday too. Plus we have cats so would worry about them getting hit if they went the wrong way.

There's a garage over the road from my office and we don't hear anything from them, but I work for a printers so I think the sounds from our machines drown it out.

Annoying as we haven't seen too many two beds around here that actually have a hallway. Ah well, back to searching!
  • If you work conventional full time hours, I wouldn't worry about it. I suggest going down on a Saturday and seeing how the sound carries.

The bonus is it's very near if you have a problem with your vehicle, and there are unlikely to be late night parties.

I saw one last week, next door to an online car dealer/restorer. He had a very big shed. I walked away

That for me would be one reason too many for me to rule out that particular house.
  • It would be quiet at night though, so no thumping loud music until 3am or arguing couples.

But you have said that the house is "end of terrace" so sounds like you would still share a wall with a neighbour which negates that.

Most of the people commenting here sound like homeowners who can afford to be more fussy as they have more to lose if they get it wrong.
