I'm really shocked that people's unis are so blase about not having the books available. At my uni there were reference copies of all key texts, and several of them were available as e-books too.

I can't emphasise enough the importance and value of using journals though. Get to know the various search engines really well, because there's such a massive wealth of information there.

Me too. Maybe I'm just used to having access to one of the best academic libraries in Europe, but we have access to every university library in Britain as well as the large public ones. On the most popular texts there is very short loans of four hours so you're pretty much guaranteed the book. Then there are the e-books too as long as you have a Athens password.

Can you not make suggestions to your library about making the books more available?

Journals are very useful (especially the references which can lead to some other texts) but can be a right pain to plough through and can be pretty hard going at times.

    Hello,

I am the person who runs Indibooks, which is a 'not-for-profit' site. The idea of the site is to re-cycle used social work, fostering and adoption books and occasionally sell new books, when we can buy them at good enough rates. We aim to try and keep prices lower than other used book sites and provide other useful info for people in the social work/care fields.

If you register on site, we let you know when new stock comes in. I have also compiled a guide to buying new and used social work books online.

    Hope this helps.

Obviously libraries can't have a copy for every student, but surely they can restrict the loan on them if they are in high demand?

The restriction is a week for key texts, with 83 people plus waiting for one book, i'd have finished the year before getting my hands on a copy. I've also found that local libraries don't carry any o fthe texts in question.

I'd recommend buying key texts only if you can afford them. Then you have then whenever you need them, don't have to worry about taking them back and you have them for future reference.

I started my social work degree in September, and my name is also Fizz...how freaky!

    Have a look at https://www.checkabook.com - it's a book price comparison site.
