    Hi
I think it's unusual for a laptop to recognize one type of DVD and not the other.

When you make recordings with a DVD recorder you are supposed to 'finalize' them.
    Do you know about this?
    Have you finalized it?

  • hi bat999
there was nothing i noticed in the instructions that he gave me with the recorder so i never finalised it.
you reckon its worth trying again?
it did work on the play on the player he gave me because i tried it after trying it on my own 2 players and laptop

    Hi
I think that an unfinalized DVD+R will play on the machine that it was recorded on, but not on any other until it is finalized.

I haven't got a DVD recorder. See if someone else on this forum can explain it better than me.

Contrary to what seems to be popular belief (judging by the replies above) there are some dvd drives that don't recognised +r disks. Though this depends upon how old they are obviously, though some of them can be firmware flashed to update them to recognise newer disks.

Before you go throwing away these newly recorded +r disks, you could try the following. Use dvdshrink to look at the disks and see if it can retrieve your recordings: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd_shrink.cfm install, create 2 folders on your c:\ ie: 1 and 2, drop into the program options set folder 1 to temp files, folder 2 to folders. It will analyse the disk and probably show you onscreen what it sees in the preview window, if you click 'backup' it will rip the disk to your harddrive so you'll need around 5gb of free space.

You will then be able to burn these folders the 'Audio_ts' and 'Video_ts' to another dvdr of your chosen format ie: -r for instance. Then you will have your chosen movie on your chosen media.

If dvdshrink doesn't work, you could try ISOBuster: http://uploadmb.com/dw.php?id=1193223275&/2/isobuster.zip (yes I put that file there, as it's an old freeware version of the program which is freely distrubutable compared to the now licensed version). It will interogate the dvd in your dvd drive and will hopefully show you two folders in the right pane, 1 'audio_ts' and a 'video_ts' right click on those, select 'extract' and point it to a folder on your harddrive. It should extract them leaving you with those two files. Yes the 'audio_ts' file will be empty in both instances, but you will need this particular folder as it's part of the dvd standard, if you don't include the two folders on your target -r dvdr, the disk won't play.

As for burning the audio_ts and video_ts folders, it's just a simple job of using your favourite burning software and burning them as data to a -r dvdr. Or you could use IMGBurn http://www.imgburn.com/ simply install and click on 'mode\build' then point it towards the 2 folders on your harddrive, it will create an .iso file for you which if you choose 'mode\write' it will burn to your chosen media type.

    HTH
It could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.
  • thanks ABH for the detaled help but i tried them both and i think my laptop just doesnt recognise +r. It is a acer aspire 5101AWLMi.
it will make a lot of noise the the dvd goes in but eventually an error message comes up and says somthing like no disc
