Flight Compensation Advice - Emirates

Hello,
I'm looking for some friendly advice.
In December last year we flew from Newcastle to Auckland (via Dubai) with Emirates.
Before take off we were told the flight was overbooked and were offered a taxi to Glasgow, to take a flight from there to Dubai, with a short time between landing and the flying out to Dubai plus free return flights to Auckland, to be used within 12 months.
Faced with the prospect of 36 hours of travelling with a moody 10 year old, I decided to refuse as we had a 10 hour layover in Dubai, with a hotel room, before the 16 hour flight from Dubai to Auckland.
Half way through the flight to Dubai a passenger took ill and we had to land in Istanbul. Once the passenger was off the plane there was a technical issue, which meant we were grounded for over 4 hours. By the time we got to Dubai we only had enough time to grab an hour at the hotel before having to head back to the airport - oh how I wished I'd taken that deal!
So, we made our connecting flight but without the overnight rest we'd planned for and with rather large phone bills from using a small amount of data and making a few calls to update family from both Turkey and Dubai.
Do you think I can make a claim?
Thanks in advance

Your arrival time in Auckland appears to be exactly what was planned, if airlines are responsible for delays caused by missed connections, I cannot see how they can be held responsible for getting you to your ultimate destination on time. The delay on the way appears to have been caused by an in flight emergency, which if it had caused a delay would not have entitled you to compensation in any event0
