I think you're correct.
And I've realised why.
If two people were travelling together, what's to stop one of them putting their cabin item in the hold and then the other handing them a second piece?
If the system was designed for it, of course, the fact that they'd checked their cabin bag could be marked on the boarding pass, but, as you say, the system is the system and it's probably best not to confuse it..0 -
