At home, I mostly use a kindle tablet for browsing but I do need a PC for maintaining my finance spreadsheet so I use a laptop as we live in a small cottage and don't have room to have a desktop PC just sitting dormant for most of the week.

Business use is a completely different ballgame as we use desktops 95% of the time and only use a laptop when out of the office (which is rare).

I have always had a desktop for the best part of 25 years. I only had a laptop for my first year of uni and absolutely hated it.

My partner and I have one each for gaming (just upgraded) and we have retired my 6 year old desktop, using as a media server, which in turn was the replacement of my previous desktop beforehand.

I think I have one or two more knocking about running xp and 98 for older pc games

Its been covered but the key criteria are the input devices and the display.

Once you have those right for your use case what the box that drives them looks like is independent.

Topologically a games console is a desk top equivalent.
The input device and display are separate from the engine.

For some tasks I like a full size keyboard decent mouse at a desk and a big screen or two.

Others task like this reply are fine on a tiny touchscreen phone.
