Desktop computers dead

I have a "desktop" pc but it has never actually been used on a desk - I have my monitor on a small table (about 18" high) so I can sit on my sofa while I use the PC - I have a wireless keyboard with integrated touchpad that rests on the arm of my sofa. The actual pc fits nicely under the small table.0

I want to sit at my desk, with a big monitor.
I want the keyboard close to me, at the height of my elbows, and I want the monitor about 18 inches beyond the keyboard, at least 8 inches off the desk. Can't do that with a laptop, where I would have a permanent stoop, looking down at the top edge of the keyboard.
 Desktop for me, every time.
Laptop + docking station. My work one supports 3 monitors (i have 3*22 inch ones), 8 usb ports, 32 GB ram and has a 500GB ssd. I never use it as a proper laptop. A lovely laptop it is, but fairly sure there was no change from £30000

So you think desktop computers will eventually just die off like the dinousaurs did. If not why not and what do you prefer?
No. I don't want a tiny 17" screen. I don't want the compromise of mobile processors, or the lack of upgrade and configuration options that laptops give.
I have a Dell Precision laptop with an i7 processor, 16GB RAM, M2 SSD and 4k touch screen. It's very nice, convenient for trips etc but trying to use it every day for work, or at home would drive me batty.Proud member of the wokerati, though I don't eat tofu.Home is where my books are.Solar PV 5.2kWp system, SE facing, >1% shading, installed March 2019.Mortgage free July 20230

I just wonder how people manage to type letters on an Ipad and stuff.0

anyone tried changing the cpu on a laptop? anyone tried using word, access, excel, etc on a tablet/phone?
desktop with 3 x monitors is where the proper work is done:-)"The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson0

Ditto. I spend most of my working week sat in front of carefully positioned (according to some health and safety mumbo jumbo) screens & keyboard, so it's what I'm used to. Why would I want to come home and squint at a tiny little 6 inch, 10 inch or even a medium sized laptop screen?
I'm probably not the 'average user', I don't have the technical knowledge, but I still help out (moderator style) on a few sites, as well as keeping all my own stuff in order. I started using a bigger screen (28 inch) which was great as I could do more at the same time, being able to see a few windows at once instead of flicking between them. Then I got another monitor the same, so now have 2 x 28 inch next to each other.
I find it so much easier being able to view multiple windows, programs, spreadsheets or whatever I'm doing. I can get the 'computer stuff' done so much quicker, and then leave it, and get on with the rest of my life.
If the day ever comes that all I want to do is read and post inane Twatter and Farcebook comments I'd probably consider something like an iPad, but for now it would still be nothing more than a dust gathering gimmick.
I'd even get rid of my 'smartphone' and buy a proper (phone & text only) mobile if I could find any decent, and reasonably cheap ones.0

For productivity, versatility, maintainability and cost-effectiveness(? sp) a desktop wins hands-down every time
The other thing that we (the human race) is storing up for itself with over-use of poxy small screens on phones & tablets is no end of eyesight problems. This has been brought home to me recently as after almost 40 years of looking at various screens I now need glasses for reading, VDU use, phone & tablet, etc...How quickly is this gong to happen to younger people who spend all their time squinting at a phone from a very young age??......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple 0 0

All these different versions of a computer have a role to play. Desktops will not die as they have their own role to play.
The biggest problem is people can be very lazy and ignorant to their own personal needs and will buy devices based on the wrong things like keeping up with the Joneses or ignorant of technology. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. I buy lots of desktops still, but they are changing with the times. They are all now the size of a small book, have i5 and i7 processors, nvme disks, 3 monitor outputs, wifi, and use a max of 65w power, and are quite quick.
Inside of course its a high-end laptop chipset and processor with no keyboard or monitor in a tiny metal case. They are a delight to both work with and to maintain. They do command a premium price, but are becoming mainstream.0
