Heating not coming on...

Hi All,

I hope that you can help me to identify what type of heating syetsm i have and then where i can look to refill the system with water..

We moved into a property 3 weeks ago and the previous owners have emigrated ( so I am stuggling to contact them to ask) and in the meantime it our radiators have been on/off intermittently, irrispective of settings used on timers/stwitches that appear to be attached.

We have what looks like an immersion tank upstairs and also a gas powered boiler of some kind in the garage.

I do have images, however am not alld to post links to these- maybe pm me if you need them

Our previous house just had a combi boiler.

When we moved in I blead the air out of the rads and all seemed well for 2 weeks. One rad ( the one in the garage) seems to have a drainage pipe/outlet below and this has leaked around 2 pints of rusty water- captured in an old milk bottle..

Today the gas boiler has not fired up at all ( no pilot visible )

Im not sure what all the buttons do that are next to the immersion heater but assume that at least on is linked to the Gas boiler as there are no switches close that i would expect to be abl eto turn it on/off.

My guess at this stage is that pressure has beel lost in the system due to the drip coming from the garage radiator and that this is the reason the boiler isnt firing but i have no idea how this would be topped up having searched for a loop with taps on either end to refill.

Has anyone ever seen this type of setup before and if so any ideas what i may need to do in order to get the central heating working?

You lost pressure when you bled the rads and didn't top the pressure back up.

2 pints from a leaking rad is a lot, you need to get the rad replaced, or maybe just the valve.

Get an engineer in th check over the whole system and make repairs.

    Hi PhilE

That was my guess too, I have since isolated the rad in question and am looking to work out how I would top the pressure up but havent seen a system like it so am a little stumped

If it's a "traditional" vented system, then you don't have to worry about loss of pressure. Look in the loft for an expansion tank (usually about the size of a toilet cistern). If it has one, check that there is actually water in it. Such systems normally also have a big cold water tank in the loft, and a hot water cylinder.

If it's a sealed pressurised system, then it should be like any combi boiler, with an obvious pressure gauge, and a filling loop to refill it if the pressure's low.

Modern boilers don't have pilot lights. They use spark ignition systems instead. It saves gas.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Post your pics on a hosting site (just google picture hosting site there are loads) then post the links on here without http or www then the forum just thinks it's text
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

Here are your pictures. It would be most helpful if you posted a picture of the boiler with the front flap open as that is where it is likely to see any fault codes or lights and (if there is one) the pressure gauge.

I don't see a flap, or any thing else movable on the boiler :/

    Hi Le_Kirk,

I have been in the loft and found what appears to be a large black cistern. It has two copper pipes and one overflow attached.

Does this indicate a vented system? and does that translate into not needing to be pressurised in the same way as my old system that did have a flexi hose and two taps?

    It is full of water.

Having had a good look at the boiler, i can see no flap or even make/model .

No trace of a pressure gauge anywhere.

Having thoght about it one of the pumps was quite noisy during week 1-2 however has since stopped making such a racket, however has worked ( intermittently ) since.

I did book an engineer visit and that is due on the 18th April- just wanting to see if i can get it going for the meantime, especially if it's a simple fix.
