Some Councils have lower HB savings limits...

The natonal limit for maximum savings for Housing Benefits is 6k. Some councils have lower limits. Bolton, for some reason, have set their limit at 3k.

Worth checking your local council's Housing Benefut pages instead of assuming the national recommended limit is kept.

Unless law has changed ? I don't think councils can set there only limits.

Central government have always set the savings limit.

I've had a quick look and the £3k is for council tax support, which is set by individual councils. All it said on the website about housing benefit was that above £16k you can't get it, which fits with the national rules.

Can't see any reference to £3k for Housing Benefit/Universal credits
I can see they reference £3k for their council tax reduction...but believe councils can set their own rules for that...

Do you mean council tax reduction?

With council tax, councils can indeed set their own limits. South Glos has an absolute savings limit on CTR of 6k, not a slow reduction over 6k up to 16k.
    It has caught people out.

Hmmm but there is no national council tax recommended savings limit, so really your entire post doesn’t make any sense even with HB replaced with CTR.

To be fair I imagine with all the benefit changes over the last few years this one could have slipped most people by. It certainly wasn't as well publicised as many, and what little there was concentrated on councils not having to provide 100% any more.

There is a recommended limit for CTR in that the default scheme has a ceiling limit of £16k which was intended to mirror the CTB scheme - as local authorities have delegated powers though (except for pensioners) the recommended default scheme limit isn't really a bar on them changing it if they feel it is not right for their own scheme. Apparently most councils have come down to £6k.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
