Heating help

I receive Child tax credits as a single parent and work 4 days a week. I've been contacted out of the blue, by a company who has said that if I receive child tax credits I can qualify for a new boiler ( for oil). I've never heard of such a scheme and must admit to being a little concerned that it will turn out to be a contribution towards a boiler and I'll be left with paying an amount towards a boiler that isn't in my budget for this year.

Has anyone else heard of such a scheme or had an boiler replaced under the scheme?

    There is this

Although it says towards the end that they usually replace gas as opposed to oil. Probably best to call the number listed and ask them.

There are grants available for new boilers if you either own your home or privately rent yes. However, they aren't 100% free. If you own your own then they will give a percentage towards the cost but it depends on household income.

If you privately rent then they will give your landlord a percentage towards the cost of the replacement boiler but they're certainly not free.

I had similar about two years ago. I too thought that it must be a catch. Anyhow out of curiosity I contacted them - n power. Not having them as my preferred supplier - Scottish Power for the past 15 years, they came out and did a survey.

About 8 weeks later and having to demonstrate that I was receiving Pension Credit, they fitted a brand new boiler.
There was nothing to pay towards it either.

I have no idea if this is the same or if they do oil boilers, but yes it was a genuine offer. My 13 year old boiler was replaced with a more efficient one.

As i said it does depend on household income.
  • We have LPG for heating and water last year we were approached and offered a new boiler as ours was over 6 years old and not energy efficient,it depended on benefits received we got a brand new worscester boiler with 7 year warranty, no catches and nil payment from us.
These schemes seem to come and go, I assume they run out of money.
Just to add this was the second "free" boiler as we had one in our last house about 9 years ago.

I seem to recall media stories where people were offered the boiler free but had to pay for extras such as new gas runs if the house's piping was over a certain age or replacements not like for like (eg to first combi) here several pipework/tank alterations are needed.

My friend (the one i posted about on the Underlying entitlement to Carers Allowance thread) changed her supplier to EDF last year, during one of the phone calls with them, when they knew she was on Pension Credit, they put her forward for that payment of £140 (not sure what is is called but was towards her heating bill) and also suggested a free boiler.
She had someone come out and do a survey and a new boiler was indeed fitted about four weeks later, she didn't pay any money towards it at all.
Might be best to get in touch with your energy supplier to see what is available?
