And if you buy a custom plate, then either change or re register the new car reg details. Step son got caught with two fines, after purchasing a personalised plate, but didn't think about his Dart charge account. Going to appeal naturally.
    Hi
The 2 fines, where they on the same day or close together, IE the first fine did not arrive until the second breach was commited?
If so, in my judgement it is worth trying and he will win imo.
btw, did he upate the car ins people and any breakdown service?

  • For those who are trying to remove their vehicle reg from the Dart crossing auto charge system, you will need to add a new vehicle registration number first or you will be met with this message "Cannot erase all vehicles from account. At least one vehicle must remain." This has been mentioned in a previous post. This policy is just nuts. What if you no longer drive, are leaving the UK etc? The gov.uk web site does not have any options other than to register another vehicle BEFORE removing the one registered. So the only way I found around this was to call their offices on 0300 300 0120 and tell them I was moving abroad. They have now prefixed the word "Temp" in front of my vehicle reg number, e.g. TEMPAA00 0ZZ. Bizarre that you are forced to have a vehicle registered  even if you know you'll never, ever use this cash cow, rip-off bridge.

If you don't have a car, why do want a Dartford crossing account? You can just call, aske them to close the account and ask for a refund if there is any money in the account.

Had the same problem with my new used car, I couldn’t add it to my dart charge account as it was already registered, this also meant I couldn’t remove my old car unless I closed the account( needs one car registered). Got around this by adding wife’s car. Had to pay individual at the increased price though, I wonder if they collected both fees for the same car and crossing.
a Likewise experience with TFL and the CC, where I was told to contact the previous owner (Mobility) and get them to remove it. Again I bet they were charging twice .

If the reg was still on somebody else's account, they were paying for your crossings. You didn't need to pay again...

No, you don't need to pay again, just let it come off the account it is registered on if you're unable to add the registration to your account. We've had that with our car, I just make sure I check before each journey if I can add the car yet, if not I'll carry on using. The process for requesting to remove a registration from an account is a massive hassle so easier to wait until the owner removes it themselves.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

Not only can I not add my newly-acquired car because the previous owner has forgotten to remove it from his account, but I cannot remove my old car because I have to have at least one vehicle on the account. I wonder if I could overcome that by adding my first car's registration number, even though it was scrapped nearly fifty years ago? :D

Have a fun weekend driving over the bridge and through the tunnel. If you rack up a good wedge they might get the message.
One crossing did the trick.  The previous owner removed it from their account pretty smartly after that.  As somebody else commented, Dart Charge effectively removed my old number by changing it to a temporary dummy : this was essential as I had sold the car to a Hungarian neighbour who intended to travel home regularly.  All is now sorted.

I once temporarily registered a hire van on my account when making a trip to Germany via Dartford, and made very sure to remove it the day I arrived home.
