Not only can I not add my newly-acquired car because the previous owner has forgotten to remove it from his account, but I cannot remove my old car because I have to have at least one vehicle on the account. I wonder if I could overcome that by adding my first car's registration number, even though it was scrapped nearly fifty years ago? :D

They put a temporary false plate on my account when I was switching vehicles

Thanks for the tip. Luckily owner of my previous car never came to London ;-) But I would notice it straight away, as I get email after every payment is taken. I just added card and it's charged automatically.

Have a fun weekend driving over the bridge and through the tunnel. If you rack up a good wedge they might get the message.

Dart charge info can be updated now If you send evidence of ownership of newly purchased vehicle. Email the Dart charge “contact us” and they will process.
If you are relying on the previous owner to pay you’ll need to check the status of your vehicle every time you use the crossing or you might end up with a hefty fine!

Just received an email saying my balance for Dartford Toll is low. Turns out my old car that I sold has used my credit. Only once and my fault for not remembering to remove my old car.

Not only sold cars but HIRE vehicles also. Just got caught on this as my van was in the garage back in March and I had to pick up daughter and all her kit early as Coronavirus was closing Uni for the rest of the year. Hired a van, must have added it and forgot to remove - and have just paid for some other hirers Dartford crossing bill!
  • And if you buy a custom plate, then either change or re register the new car reg details. Step son got caught with two fines, after purchasing a personalised plate, but didn't think about his Dart charge account. Going to appeal naturally.

    Great post OP
As some others have given some other examples of toll charges, may I add = don't forget to cancel your auto renewal on your car breakdown cover - one of my cousins sold his car and only noted a couple of years later that he was still paying for the breakdown on the car they sold. The new ownners never knew about it never made a claim and the breakdown co made a goodwill gesture and repiad most of the money minus admin chargaes

    Thanks
