Help - Win 10 update seems to have screwed everything up

As above, Win 10 has just done an update and changed /got rid of everything, in a mess, don;t know how to get it back.
It just updated automatically when I switched on, when the screen came back, everything on my desktop except programs have disappeared and it says my documents/photos/videos/sticky notes etc folders are empty!!!!
That means that things like my invoices/photos/spreadsheet for taxman etc has all disappeared.
My bookmarks and passwords for sites have disappeared.
I also can't put my email address into anything as the 'at' sign is coming up as ".
Its put loads of rubbish on like lots of games etc which I don't want and taken away things I do want. Really annoying.
Is there anyway I can reverse this update?
Also, how can I stop it happening again if I manage to get things back?
I have a back up I did on an external hard drive a few weeks ago but that is at home and I am working away at the moment.
I hope someone can help me, need my info back.

You can uninstall Windows updates, but it is not likely to restore deleted files...0

Dont panic
It sounds like you have been logged on with a temporary profile - your stuff will still be there.
To see if it is, click file explorer, choose "this PC" and then "OS (C:)"
Then go into the folder called "Users"
Go into the folder that is your username
Now, have a look inside the folders in here, eg Desktop , Documents etc
Is your stuff there ?
Report back and ill help you fix
By the way, the @ replacing the " sign is the american keyboard layout,
You should see three letters near the clock that relate to the input layout you are using
Click it and change it back to ENG (united kingdom)
Please dont panic and roll back the update like a lot of people are seeming to do, this just kicks the can down the road.
And whilst issues like this can be disconcerting - they are almost always very easy to fix and you are left with a more stable system0 -
Hi Andy, Sorry got called away, just came back on. You were right, I had got logged on with a temporary profile as I did not log into Microsoft, it did tell me that it was a temporary profile but I did not know the significance of it!!
Anyway, I closed my laptop down before going off and then just switched it back on to find it loaded up as normal and my files are back again, or appear to be. So panic over. I haven't done what you said, as they were back, I presume I don't need to do it now?
Also, my keyboard is also back to normal too.
Thank you so much for your help, I was in a panic, I have some files I really did not want to lose, although as I said, I do have a back up, albeit a few weeks old, on an external hard drive which I don't carry around with me.0 -
Bet you have an up-to-date back-up now don't you??
No, my external hard drive I use to back up onto is at home and I am working away until Sunday.
I have got a memory stick but I'm having to use that for something else.
There hasn't been a lot of changes to my saved files since I did the last back up really, any photos I've taken are still in my phone.
Even if I do a back up onto my internal hard drive, if I had lost all my folders and files which I thought I had, I couldn't have restored back as it looked as if all the folders were empty.
I am going to look at getting another external hard drive and also, next time I go away, I am going to back up some of the stuff I need onto a memory stick and take that with me.0 -
Windows 10 update killed my tablet last night (AGAIN).
Had enough now, restoring it back to the older version and disabling updates 100%.
They have really clamped down on being able to block the updates, disabling it just gets ignored on the later versions.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
I hate the updates, they always change things and put stuff on I don;t want, Win 10 is rubbish would much rather go back to Win 7.0
-
...and almost every W10 update borks another machine or several....
MS really have shot themselves in the foot with 10.........Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0
