XL Tyres - Yes or No ?
Comments

I have a Saab 9-5, OE spec tyres were 91 rated to start with but wore out unevenly and ended up 'scalloping'.
Saab updated the specs to an XL 94 rated tyre which prevents the issue.0 -
There are a lot of things that you can do to your car that will not be detrimental or unsuitable yet would still require notification of a mod.I said it again, because it needed saying again in light of the posts immediately above.
XL tyres will not cause any kind of insurance woes, because they simply only differ from non-XL in one way that's irrelevant. They are not "unsuitable".
Indeed.
I'm not sure why a simple bit of info aimed at helping the OP has suddenly turned into such a debate. If the OP doesn't want the advice as intended then fine.0 -
What vehicle are you fitting them to? Large saloon/estate, mpv, suv? Crack on, fit the XL's.Looking for a pair of tyres and 97W XL C/A/70 are only 40p more than the 93V C/A/69 of the same mid range tyre. Forums chatter is split. Pro - stiffer side walls for cornering and more resilient, Con - possible harsher ride (but can't be worse than the Conti PC 2's on at the moment !)
If it's a smaller car ask yourself the following:
How often do you carry 4 passengers with luggage?
How often have you increased the tyre pressure in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations? (i.e. when carrying 4 passengers + luggage)
If the answer to both of those is never then you don't need XL's.
For the extra 40p, is it worth it? Probably. You can have results or excuses, but not both.Challenge - be 14 Stone BY XMAS!
