If an item is too big for the letterbox, does the postie have to knock the door?

Our house has a driveway which is around 50ft long. At the gate before you enter the property, there's a postbox. Our regular postie will walk to our door if there's something too big for the postbox.
But the chap who does deliveries on a Saturday does not. He simply leaves a card saying the item was too big, and we then have to collect from the sorting office. But should he make the effort to come to our door and see if we're in? Or, by having a postbox at our gate, have we inadvertently moved our point-of-delivery from our front door to the gate?
We've missed several parcels this way and it's becoming annoying, but I'm reluctant to remove the postbox as it'll mean our regular postman will have to walk down our drive every day.

I would say the you are right in the postbox on the gate is classed as your point of delivery.
Have you considered putting a cordless doorbell by the postbox?
Something like this one is cheap enough:

If it's just the Saturday bloke, you could put a sack over the letterbox on Friday night .... so there's no postbox there and he walks up the drive to the door....0

Yes it will be the point of delivery, if it's not the regular postie they won't know if there is a reason for the box such as you not wanting anyone entering your property or dogs running loose. Maybe put a laminated note on the box asking for parcels to be delivered to the house, the technically don't have to as it is beyond your delivery point but they will probably do it as it's one less thing for them to have to carry.0

Put a doorbell and intercom on the gate?Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
Regular postie - no issues. The temporary people just dump it in the porch and don't bother ringing the bell. And when I complained several times as I don't consider my porch to be a safe place to leave stuff I was threatened with not having the post delivered at all. Not impressed. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
We live in a rural area where there are no near neighbours or neighbours are all out as well.
A dustbin for parcels beside the door solves the problem so you could put one inside the gate.0 -
I think postmen and women are a law unto themselves. (Plus it's a job I'd hate). I also live in a rural area but I'd far rather they leave a card so I can collect parcels myself - leaving parcels in bins isn't ideal, even though we are quite isolated, you never know who might be lurking. Posties don't all knock, and it's a trend that seems to be increasing. But I don't think there's anything you can do. Sometimes I just get them to re-deliver to the local post office. It isn't really a big deal and this is just one of the small things we don't need to sweat over. Isn't it?Please note - taken from the Forum Rules and amended for my own personal use (with thanks) : It is up to you to investigate, check, double-check and check yet again before you make any decisions or take any action based on any information you glean from any of my posts. Our postie is lovely
Never even knocks, just opens the door and leaves everything in the lobby, signs for the stuff as well and takes any out going mail with him
Ive even trained the relief postman to do the same0 -

I can’t imagine having a front door with the sort of lock/handle you can open from the outside without a key.
Obviously I’ve always had that type of lock on a back door, but never a front. The idea that anyone could just walk in would freak me out!!0 -

I can't be doing with having to run to the door so in the morning it gets unlocked and delivery drivers know not to bother me and to just leave the parcels in the lobby, or if no one is home they open the garage and leave parcels in there
I even had a driver ring me at work to tell me he left my new phone in a drawer in the garage cos he knew I would be wanting it
I live in a tiny community, we don't get passing strangers, the front door only gets locked at night to appease mother ( she's not realised the back door is never locked lol)0
