Putting a new reg onto new but used car

Hi all,

I am due to pick up a new (used) car on Wednesday, I currently have the V750 certificate from DVLA. I am a bit out of touch with regards to how the transfer would proceed and would it be at all possible for me to get my plates printed and moved onto my new vehicle on the exact same day?

I have heard conflicting stories but it seems like people are just as confused as me/ with new DVLA changes etc. As cited from the DVLA site itself it states:

You can apply to use a private (personalised) registration number if your vehicle:

can move under its own power
is registered with DVLA
has an up-to-date log book (V5C) with the name and address of the current registered keeper
has been taxed for the last 5 years without any gaps (or a SORN has been in place for that time)

The only problem I see as a barrier to efficiently transferring the number plate on the same day is that the V5 may not be updated immediately, although I have heard you now do this online and it is quicker? Is there anything that the trade dealer can do that can make this process instant?

With regards to actually applying to put on a new reg on a car, I heard in instances you usually get approved instantly thus meaning you can immediately put the plates on your car. If anyone could possibly advise me as much as possible it would be hugely appreciated!

When you say "new" reg, do you mean an 18 plate?
When you say "new (used)" car, do you mean a car first registered during March this year, so eligible for an 18 plate?

If you're just talking about transferring a plate from retention to a car that you're buying, then this is something the trader will do regularly. Alternatively, you could sink to the depths of driving it around on the proletarian plate that it comes with for a few days until you get the V5C through in your name.

14 plate, sorry. Do you think I will be able to transfer on the same day?

You're not helping yourself by drip feeding information.

Is the "14" plate one that you already have and wish to put on the new-to-you vehicle?

What was the month/year of original registration on the new-to-you vehicle?

as long as the plate is eligible for transfer to your new car then no reason why you cant do it on the day

you will have to wait until Tuesday as the on the day service is only available during office hours

I took my plate off a car 18 months ago and it took seconds to do and the longest part of the process was bolting the plates to the car

Just to make myself clear, I am currently driving a vehicle with a standard number plate. However, I have a private one that is free to put onto another vehicle. I am looking to pick up my new car on Wednesday so I want to transfer the private reg onto this car (reg is 2014/14)

has the dealer that is selling you the new car sent the V5 off to transfer the new car into your name

if so you may have to wait for the V5 to come back in your name before you can do the transfer

No, he has not. Stated that he will do it on the day, hence I am unsure about how long everything will take and if it is even possible to get it done on the day.

Car in question has not been purchased yet, will be on Wednesday. Plate in question is currently unassigned to any particular vehicle. Wish to transfer the plate onto a vehicle on the same day as purchasing the car if this is possible?

It's not possible, force ten is correct you have to wait for the V5 to arrive in your name.

I just did this and the new V5 took 10 days to arrive.
