Last night we were watching recorded program. Near the end, we noticed that the little LED on the TV was flickering (green). I put the TV and HDD recorder in standby and the TV led changed to flickering red. I went towards the TV, to remove and replace the power lead (which I did, to no effect). While doing that I noticed that, as i approached the TV, the flickering stopped and as I stepped back it began again.

I did this a number of times, at which point we thought I had begun to get supernatural powers.

So I sat down and for some reason decided to pick up the TV remote (I had been using the HDD recorder remote up til then). As I do so, the red flickering stopped. So I opened the battery compartment and spun the batteries). The problem has now dissapeared. My moving towards the TV simply blocked the path from the TV remote and the TV (the TV remote was sitting pointing at the TV).

How weird is all that?

What was the point of spinning the batteries?
Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.

You often get a bit of oxidation forming on electrical contacts such as battery terminals and this oxidation can have quite a high resistance which stops the unit from functioning properly.
Whilst it's best to totally remove the batteries and clean the terminals, simply spinning them can clean a bit of the oxidation off for a while.
