I'll also back GMX, been using them for years with absolutely no problems.
Also based in Germany, so a little more secure than some others.Drinking Rum before 10am makes you

Yes, GMX. I moved to them when NZ11 started charging. They are good. Only minor criticism - you're stuck with American date format in the folder views. I also use ProtonMail. Again, a good, free service, and presumably secure.0

Thanks all for the suggestions to date.
I think it will take me some time to work through the research for them all!!
Working backwards (from Frozen's post) I have had a look at Protonmail, the descriptions ,blogs and support. Being more security conscious, I like the idea of end to end encryption (but only partially of use if other contacts are not on Proton) and the ' Zero ' claims of no third party sharing/access/advertising. Downside seems to be early stages of development for some 'features' such as the Bridge (on paid for versions only) for client Access (Outlook/Thunderbird and the like) and lack of backup of mail on the servers.
Can see the benefits for peer to peer Comms in a supposedly secure manner (could be legal or illegal!) but downside means it is not for me - or OH.

Protonmail from https://protonmail.com/
Was mentioned in panorama or dispatches in regard facebook cambridge analytica issue, to secure and can be set to self deleting emails. https://mashable.com/2018/03/20/cambridge-analytica-protonmail-erasing-email/
Still it is a very good and private service.
Great email provider, but try signing up to MSE forums with an @protonmail.com address and you'll be immediately rejected for "using an invalid email domain"

I use Fastmail, it is well established. I originally picked it because of its support for Yubikey (and two factor authentication in general).
I would personally recommend only using an email provider that supports 2FA, it seems that Tutanota do not. Neither does GMX apparently. The reason is that this protects you from email hijacking, which is in the news a lot nowadays.
There is a list of email services that support 2FA here:

Your wish is granted.
Edit: damn, it's just popped up. Scratch that, it's only on the main Techie Stuff board.0 -

Thank heavens for that, hope it is just the start! Not a good thing for a site that deals in money, personal issues and problems to send all the data including logins, passwords, links read then commented on, in clear text.0
