A good email provider?

My current email provider is ceasing to provide a service as from May.
I am looking for recommendations of a good service, please.

No doubt you will ask what 'good' means!

I would like one that is reliable, simple, secure and does not result in data sharing or adverts! Multiple accounts required for me and OH.

My old provider has been the Consumers Association and I have found it excellent ( especially from the support point of view ), if a simple service based upon an underlying basic Squirrel interface. As a member as I also have access to the other Which services.

Many a service is free these days but I believe you often pay for it somehow! Not keen on Yahoo and do not like the Gmail web interface .... and I also have concerns about security (data privacy for example) of these type of services. I use web interface and Outlook as a client on POP.

Any recommendations?

If the only problem with gmail is the web interface you could use Thunderbird as the mail client. I find the combo works well.

Gmail with a client interface ? (outlook or thunderbird for example)

Really you need to appreciate that if you are getting the service for free, then you ARE the product and should expect that your data is being monatised in some way - if only to feed you ads.

Other than that, you have the option to get some cheap hosting and use the email provided with that - with the added feature that the domain name is your own eg email@heedtheadvice.com

A similar question was asked a bit back, GMX seemed the preferred choice but I've not used it. Maybe worth a look?

GMX is definitely my favourite. All the features you're likely to need and it works well with Thunderbird.

    Protonmail from https://protonmail.com/

Was mentioned in panorama or dispatches in regard facebook cambridge analytica issue, to secure and can be set to self deleting emails. https://mashable.com/2018/03/20/cambridge-analytica-protonmail-erasing-email/

Still it is a very good and private service.

Yes, I agree. I use Gmail for trivial stuff and GMX for more important communications. GMX works well on an Android device also, using Aquamail.

Leaving aside the issue of monetisation of data, when you aren't paying for service, you can't really expect decent customer support. Of course, paying for it doesn't guarantee decent service, as BT customers know, but you have a better chance.

Another vote for GMX, I've used it since Orange/Freeserve closed last year and it's been excellent. Works well with Thunderbird and the Android app is good.
  • Gmail for unimportant stuff, use it via a web interface or a phone app. Loads of storage, secured via two factor log-on.

For important stuff, Tutanota. Only 1GB of space on the free version but very secure and open source. Based in Germany:

For the paranoid, as per the earlier post, ProtonMail based in Switzerland:
