refusal cancelling sky services re price increase

i wonder if someone can help, its that distressing im having to post my first post after all these years! i have my letter regarding april 1st 2018 rises from sky. i am in my 30 day window. i re contracted in september 2017 for a further18 months BUT i cannot leave even though my prices are all rising.

i joined for another deal for tv broadband phone and sports [4 things] and all got resigned on the same day in sept 2017. sports im getting for £18 a month. i resigned up with them in september but ive been with them for 9 years. im paying about £85. the april 1st 4 individual rises broken down total approximately £4 plus call charges.

they are telling me i can cancel phone and broadband, but not the tv and sport even though all 4 services resigned on the same day and on the same welcome email and letters. they are telling me each of the 4 services have different individual contracts, each of the 4 services have a different rise amounts, and its 4 contracts i have, not 1 contract. even though the letters talk about 'my contract' as 1 contract.
as i have 4 lots of rises accross 4 service from them i want to cancel everything but they are forcing me to keep everything as by making me stay for tv and sports its not cost effective to disconnect internet and phone. totally bamboozling me they are also saying something about sky sports is discounted and not rising enough or something. its as clear as mud and deliberately confusing .

they also said something about as my services years ago started at different times, when they recontracted all on the same day in september 2017, they have different individual contracts ... even though i recontracted them all at the same time. how would that even be possible? everything was recontracted at same time for same duration 18 months?

how can they all start again on new 18 month deals in september but it not be "1contract". i feel like they are cheating me.
what an absolute bunch of chancers!

They are absolutely correct. TV is a different contract to LR & BB. Hence the reason there are different Ts&Cs for them. It doesn't matter whether you signed up on the same day for all of them, or 3,6,9 months apart. They are a separate contract. They are not cheating you, they are holding you to the contract you freely agreed to (which is an up to 10% annual rise in the TV cost).

With LR/BB, you have a legal right to leave if prices rise. The same does not apply to TV.

Why do you say it's not cost effective to change LR/BB? It won't cost you anything to switch those parts to another supplier, so if you can find it cheaper then it certainly is cost effective. I don't know how much you are paying for that aspect, but if it is more than £21 then there is at least 1 cheaper ISP out there (Vodafone).

If you are struggling to work out what your price rise will be as you have discounts on your bill, have at look at your account on the Sky website. You can access future bills there which will clearly explain exactly how much more you will be paying every month, and where that extra money is being charged.

Actually it's not. And they are 100% correct in what they say.

Depending on what your paying for BB/LR (in terms of product & price) you can get ADSL from Now TV for £11.67 (effective) or UL fibre for £16.67 (effective). You're counted as a new customer despite Sky owning them.

Sky themselves are selling ADSL to new customers for an effective £10.42 (all deals through MSE). https://broadband.moneysavingexpert.com/

Use the above to reduce your price if you can.
  • thanks for information. its a very clever thing to sell me all 4 items as one price, but then split it into 4 contracts effectively tying you up despite rises. very creative indeed.

The thing is, we as consumers have to take some responsibility and at least glance at the terms of any services we use. There is only so much information we can be spoon fed.

You must have had Sky's T&Cs booklet on joining and if it's lost the details are on the website.

TV and broadband/phone have always been separate, though they may say we can do you a particular deal on one , if you agree to something on the other.

TV, as mentioned, has no get out clause and needs 30/31 days notice to leave penalty free once your minimum term is served. Broadband and phone only need two week's notice, but you need to migrate in order to keep a continual service and your number, avoiding a cease fee.

I am cancelling Sky TV next month (end of contract) but have been told that my broadband was discounted and will go up by £13.50 a month if I don't have a TV package. The contracts were taken out as separate contracts 6 months apart. Sky say that I was informed of this when I took the Sky talk and broadband out but I disagreed as I knew I wouldn't be renewing the contract for TV. Sky are effectively holding me to ransom by threatening a the £13.50 rise for not renewing my TV contract. Surely they can't do that> Anyone Help!

Yes they can - you get a lower price because of the bundle. If you choose to split the bundle, then the standard charges reapply. I am with VM, have TV phone and BB. I do not use the phone and TV, as BB is the only service `I depend upon. However, BB on its own is £12 more per month if I split off the unwanted services - so it is cheaper to run with them and take the discount.

    Hi Buzby.
Thanks for your reply. I took the Sky TV contract out 6 months before the broadband contract. That would make them separate contracts. Apart from that, nowhere in my terms and conditions does it state that the discount is on condition that I retain Sky TV. Sky said that I would have agreed to that when verbally I ordered the Broadband but as I Knew I wasn't renewing the TV I wouldn't have agreed! I have asked for a copy of the recording but so far silence. I'll post again if I here any more.

Just out of interest what kind of broadband is it (ASDL, Fibre) and how much is it?

The broadband is ADSL. The cost of the broadband alone would be About £19 a month. Then there is line rental of 18.99 a month. Sky gave me a discount when I signed for broadband so they are only charging me £6 a month plus line rental. If I end TV they want to increase that by £13 a month.
