British airways cancellation

I booked a holiday for 6 people with British Airways back in September 2017 for August 2018 to Orlando. We all paid a deposit of £125 each and planned to pay the rest of the holiday when it was due. Unfortunately over the weekend one person has had to drop out.

I have contacted British Airways and advised them of the situation, which they explained because we purchased the attraction tickets with them (universal and disney) they are 'non refundable' as they have already bought them in for us. This means that the person who has dropped out will still have to pay just under £600 (excluding deposit) for a holiday they can't go on.

I then explained to British Airways that we may cancel the whole holiday as 2 other people were unsure if they wanted to come due to the other person cancelling (very confusing) and they come back to say that if 3 people cancelled they wouldn't have to pay for the attraction tickets but if 1 person cancelled they would still have to pay.

Surely there has to be a way round this? Has anyone been in a similar situation that can help?

Thanks

Lily

When you book something you enter into a contract. If someone changes their mind they still have to pay. So I suggest that you make this clear to the person who is dropping out.

The time to think about whether you want to go on holiday; buy a house; or have building work done... is before you sign the contract.
  • Thanks. It just feels BA are making it up as they go along with the attraction tickets - it doesn't add up that 1 person pays but 3 people don't... :/

There is general agreement that BA telephone staff are not very good, so it is entirely possible that they are making it up as they go along, at least when it comes to the explanation. We can be confident that there will be a cost, whether just once person or three people cancel. See if you can get something in writing stating precisely what the total cost would be in both cases. Even then that might not be what you end up paying!
