You could fit him with a portable Giraffe 4, which is a system fitted in lorries to warn the driver that an overhead bridge, beam etc. is too low to pass under.

    Thank you, TamsinC :)
We had a deal when we started looking that we would give our honest opinion when leaving each house, and if we didn't agree then we wouldn't consider the house. We walked out of this one and I was gushing about how much I loved it and he just said "Katie, I can't fit in it" ...what a drama queen! :rotfl:

If that’s all he said, then it sounds like he didn’t really like the house anyway, regardless of the headroom issue. If he loved it as much as you did, I’d expect him to be the one coming up with ideas of raising the doorframe heights etc.

Ask to see the house again and take a carpenter with you. If it’s mostly stud walls they can deal with it. brick walls would need a builder first and then a carpenter to finish.
You can then know for sure if you can transform it into your ideal house.

Altering the door frames is no big deal, of course you then need bigger doors . .

    Good grief! It's personal choice!

He'll either get used to ducking his head, or get used to banging his headd.

    No one can predict which.

When we moved into an old cottage, my 6ft 2 husband had to duck going up and downstairs. He said you only bang your head once and after that you get used to ducking!
 Ageing is a privilege not everyone gets.

Bear in mind you don't just walk through a house empty handed. You may be carrying a tray of drinks or anything else which may be more awkward if having to stoop

Were I your OH, I would not be very impressed if I read this thread. If you can "feel" something for one house, you can feel it for any amount of others. I would not consider for one nanosecond buying a house my wonderful hubby did not agree on.

I have showed my partner this thread, as I made it specially to ask opinions of those who had dealt with such an issue personally. That was the entire point, as neither of us have lived in a "character property", but I was sure some people on here had done. He doesn't seem offended or unimpressed, but thank you very much for your opinion. You sound like a perfect partner and I can only hope to be as selfless as you someday.

For those who have any interest, we discussed the issue and decided that the potential work and upheaval just wasn't worth the house and have already viewed several other houses that we both preferred. Back on the horse, I suppose! :D

Good for you, Katie... Sooo not jealous your OH is 6'4"; mine is 5'6", 2" shorter than me! :rotfl:

Wishing you the best of luck with your search; you will know when you find "the one" just as you did with your OH (as did I)

OP, you are already answering your own question by....well, questioning whether the property is right for your partner (and you).

Walk away, hand-in-hand with your partner, with them walking upright rather than bent double :-)
