How much space do you lose converting garage?

Hi All

Wonder if someone can help.

If the internal dimensions of an unconverted garage are 2.4 metres by 4.9 metres and we get it converted, what could I reasonably expect the internal dimensions to be after insulation plastering etc?

Is it 10cms all round? (So Internal dimensions would then be 2.2metres by 4.7 metres or is it more/less that would be lost by converting?)

Many thanks

Is the garage currently a single brick outer wall and attached to the side of your house?

    Thanks

Difficult to see how much he lost space wise - and he framed on top of insulation. Obviously want to lose as little as physically possible as the garage isn't the widest and it's not going to be a home cinema or anything like that.

Your friend did an amazing job though!

    Cheers

Don't forget the change in floor/roof height, often a bigger problem!

Thanks - the floor will need to come up quite a bit but the roof goes up loads and is pitched so no probs there.

My main concern is maximizing the width.

Having done a number of these, allow around 120mm on each elevation to allow for 100mm kingspan insulation, plasterboard and skim.

Thank you - so that's about 24cm loss from internal dimensions.

Why would it need insulating on the house wall? Presumably that's a double skinned wall? Our bedroom extension only had plasterboard attached the previous external wall and skim, no insulation required on what had previously been an external wall.

Yes that's a point - would it just need battens and plasterboard then?

    Might save a few cms?
