Likely spam.Tesco.net email
Tesco still runs email addresses from its tesco.net email service. It’s fairly old hat compared to the free email services available in 2018, including Google’s Gmail. Settings must be changed manually, including IMAP and POP3 to determine whether you keep a copy of emails on the Tesco server or on your home machine.
All of this technology has been totally superceded by the likes of Gmail keeping everything in the cloud, so if you switch to a free account nowadays, you’ll likely never have to worry about altering Port 25 or 110 settings.
Contacting Tesco about Tesco.net
If you need any help with your tesco.net email address or account, you can email support@tesco.net or call 0330 123 4331.
However given Tesco are out of the BB game, expect the email to go at some point. Better to start moving to a new email address now.0 -
Got a reply today, tesco are shutting down their mail service in June and stopping fowarding from the beginning of October, not good.0

How much were you paying for the service? I thought they had stopped being an ISP some time ago, so its inevitable.0

Contacted Tesco and got this reply today - so it is real!
We can confirm that the Tesco.Net email service will be closing on 26th June 2018.
We have had to stagger the communication over a 3-week timescale and all customers will receive the notification by Wednesday 4th April 2018.
All customers will receive an email notifying them of the closure along with an attachment containing step by step instructions on how to set-up email forwarding. If you have not received this email yet but would like to set-up email forwarding now, we have attached the instructions to this email.
We are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused and would like to thank you for being a loyal customer to us.
Best wishes,
Bipul

I received the email yesterday informing me my email was closing, almost deleted it as regularly receive scam emails. As a loyal customer of Tesco for many years I would at least have expected a letter due to the HIGH importance and confidentiality of emails.
A discount voucher for years of loyalty and free advertising would have been nice too but what else could we expect for the inconvenience now spending my precious free time updating email contacts and hundreds of website logins after already spending 40 hours a week on a computer at work!
Good bye Tesco from me, I rarely complain about anything but in the absence of the above I will no longer be shopping with you or using any of your services and I'm sure the feelings of many more :T I'll treat myself to something nice with my remaining clubcard vouchers.0 -
A bit of an extreme reaction to the closure of a free(?) service don't you think?!?
Emails are definitely NOT confidential, and you should never send confidential information via email.
I would say though that email is the clearest way to send a communication such as this, as it is regarding an email account. Add to that the fact that Tesco probably don't have addresses for all their email customers so it would be impossible to send out letters.
If you want an email address for life, you have to put your hands in your pocket and pay for your own domain. Then you are not at risk of it being closed down. As this closure seems to be causing you hardship I would say that this is the best way forward for you.
As an aside, the email closure has been on the cards every since they withdrew from the ISP market 2 or 3 years ago. Plenty of time to pick another email provider.
Oh, and you didn't advertise for free. You advertised in exchange for an email account.0 -
I got my email yesterday, making it sound like this was just a follow up, not the first time they were sharing this info. It also made it sound like tesco.net was realtively new and not much hassle. I have had my accont for 20 odd years. I am sure it was originally set up as 'freebie' for people who had a Tesco Bank account of some sort, which ties into also ending of the very jolly Tesco Clubcard Plus account. Bah humbug Tesco! I know there were only a few of us still using it and there are better versions, but it has served me well and was a constant I did not have to worry about.
As it is, not only will I need to remember a new email, it will take me more than 2 months to remember who needs my email. So if I don't pay/ don't answer/ don't sign in with the right password it is not my fault.
They might have left the forwarding in place a bit longer so there is a chance of me remembering everything. Of course it will save some people from the ubiquitous 'round robin' email at Christmas which we all seem to exchange now, so there is a bright side to everything I guess!0 -
Wasn't Tesco.net a rebranded package? TalkTalk bought the internet and phone back in 2015 but I'm sure it was being provided by somebody else before that?
Still, not surprising really the email was still going. Over the years all the smaller providers that sprung up were offering email, internet, webspace, the kitchen sink, etc but the services were provided by somebody else with pennies to rub together. Some of these smaller provider's customer bases were later merged into the company who was actually providing the services so it didn't cost any more money to keep the services going as it were.
Point remains valid though - any email address from any provider is not permanent (especially the ISP ones) and shouldn't be treated as such. It's more likely to stick around for a while from the likes of Microsoft, Google and Yahoo but all of these companies could decide at any time they don't want to do email anymore and we'd all be up sh*t creek without a paddle.0
