This kind of thing makes me really angry. I think I would be making a complaint to the police - it must be possible for them to do something, after all your son was assaulted. It is sending out a message that these people are untouchable (and they are untouchable).
I agree with another poster about self-defence classes although obviously they would't help with 17 against 1. I wish I had done more of these. I did judo for a while and then tried karate but the classes were always in a freezing cold hall and I only went a few times. But you really want jujitsu. My brother did this up to black belt and it's much more geared to self defence because it's not restricted to one style.
This link is about a bouncer who found normal martial arts not much help in the real world http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geoff_Thompson
There is strong language in his books though.0 -
I could never understand why people would want to emigrate. I was of the "I'm British and proud to be" ilk. The thought of leaving good old blighty just wasn't conceivable.
However, I am beginning to see the attraction of leaving - its unlikely that I will but I've gone from "no way, not for all the tea in china" to "well if the opportunity arose"....7 Angel Bears for LovingHands Autumn Challenge. 10 KYSTGYSES. 3 and 3/4 (ran out of wool) small blanket/large square, 2 premie blankets, 2 Angel Claire Bodywarmers0 -

damn browser crashed as i was typing a reply
2nd attempt.
this is where krav maga is aimed.not the well rehearsed moves of most marshall arts but real life scenarios.
also aspects such as verbal de-escalation,defending another person, group attacks etc
anyone can bick up the basics in one clas on deflecting attacks and basic strikes.
there are levels in krav(like your blacks belts etc) if anyone wants to progress that way or you can just go ofr learning what you need
this is where i go
http://www.kravmagaedinburgh.com/civillian/index.html
and it also has a women only self defense class
http://www.combatangel.com/
okay thats only for edinburgh people but there are plenty of krav classes around.
i can definatly recommend it to anyone wanting to learn to defend and just feel a bit safer out and about
you find as the classes go on you start to be more aware of people around you and think what you would do if a person tried a move on you. a lot of krav is just fine tuning a natural flinch reaction0 -
I'll have to look out for that. Cheers0

see my sig!!!!
last week i was coming back from shopping, i had just turned into my road and a young lad with a huge rotwiller(SP?) ran in front of my car.
he started shouting that some lads were trying to beat him up and could i phone the police. i didn't have my mobile on me, so i told him to wait in my back garden and i went in, locked the door and called the police.
i had my 1 year old with me, and was a bit scared, in the meantime my oh came home from work and found a young lad with a massive dog in the garden, the lad was banging on the door as he said he was scared to be outside and he wanted to wait in the house for the police. i told him that he couldn't come in and would have to wait in the garden.
the police call centre were rubbish, she said they were busy, so i told her to send an officer now, i was on my own with a baby and wanted to see an officer in the next 10 minutes to remove this lad and his dog.
all the time this is going on the lad is still banging on the door, 30 minute later the poilce turn up!!
our street is very out of the way with no other houses nearby, the police think that this lad was checking out the street to see which houses were empty in the day.0 -
Just a quick question?...
Does your son have a friends who are willing to look after him?... The system here is a joke it unreal!
My ex g/f little brother was attacked by some yobs from down the town. I met the father, he told me to !!!! off.
Fortunately this happened in Ireland, a quick visit to the Garda and the local
Sinn Fein rep and the boys recieved a well deserved clip round the ear, the father was visited by the local IRA group with a promise of a hiding for both parties if they step out of line again.
Its a shame it doesnt happen this way here! To be fair on our friends over the water they run a hell of a tight family orientated ship!0 -
I really, really feel for everyone here who has been at the hands of these mindless aggresive morons that are bullying all and sundry these days.
If you get the opportunity to take it further through the courts go for it. My 15 year old son was pulled off his bike by 4 men (they were all aged between 20 and 24) and two teenaged girls aged 18. They threw his bike in the canal, punched and kicked him, knicked his hat, shoes and tried to get his bag.
He couldn't talk properly for 2 weeks because of his jaw and he was covered in bruises and scratches. It was 6 in the evening when it happened and they didn't have the excuse that they were drunk. They were doing it for fun and to show off in front of the girls.
The police tried to put us of and said that they would only get a caution but we took it as far as we could and two of the blokes got 4 months inside (but only did 2 months). The others got off as they didn't have enough evidence. Their solicitor was doing his damdest to get them off but the judge wouldn't have any of it and made sure they got a custodial sentence.
My son didn't have to appear in court in the end because the 2 they got admitted it in the end.
Big hugs to you all out there. It made me feel a mixture of sick, outraged and really sad when it happened to my son so I know how you are feeling. My advice is to talk to as many local people as you can, that is how we caught the guys that did it to my son. They were going round the estate bragging about it. Morons.0 -
Similar situation here a few weeks ago, my 13 year old son and 1 friend waiting for the girlfriends in the park when a gang went over to my son (one of them has been harrassing him for a while but my son always managed to walk away), the one who has been pestering him went to hit my son but my son moved and swung for him at the same time getting the first punch in (he had no choice), then a 16 year old punched my son in the face giving him a swollen black eye, I was so upset and angry, especially as one was 16.
The police were not worth calling, they did come out same day but took more than 2 weeks to even read the statements ready to act, then they rang me and said cos my son had got the first hit in (cos the scumbag missed) then my son would be the one to blame if I wished to proceed, I was furious, I asked how long he was supposed to stand there and hope each punch missed him.
After that I decided I would deal with any future incidents myself, i.e getting hold of the little scumbag or seeing the parents.
It seems that the police these days go for the easier option.
Just to add, my 6 year old son knocked an already loose screw off my neighbours gate, the police turned up to say that if I didn't replace the screw there would be a charge of criminal damage. This was within a week of the attack on my son, I don't think I'll bother calling them for anything again. No wonder this country is riddled with so much crime. If you're going to stalk me, while you're at it can you cut the grass, feed the dog & make sure I've got bread & milk in

i live inner city bristol and nothing surprises me apart from the fact that so many people think there is a functioning police force out there!! They only respond to major stuff in this area and drugs prostitution are coralled into the area of st pauls and easton so its easier to deal with. Its not the children of estate but there parents who are responsible for their misbehaviour. There are attacks nightly on somalian and other families. The parents of children know they wont be prosecuted and so encourage them to do their racist dirty work. My children have been brought u p to have manners and respect for themselves and others but it doesnt get them far around here. These feral children are capable of great harm to others and even more as they grow into even wilder adults. Black white asian there are examples of each colour in the gangs that roam the area.:j I sometimes give myself admirable advice, but am incapable of taking it.0

I think its awful what happened & in the heat of the moment the police are always blamed but its often out of the PC's control - my female relative is a WPC, one night they were the only two able to respond (2 women) and she was chasing a couple of blokes over wasteland after they ran from the premises they had broken into when she just stopped & turned back to the van as they could have easily overpowered her, they are desperately under funded, and she gets frustrated as if you do get the scumbags to court, some solicitor or do-gooding social worker gets them off with 'product of broken-home, no parental influence blah blah blah & they get a slap on the wrist & leave court with a big grin
hope all the victims on this thread are recovering0
