Inkjet printers are of no use if they are not in regular use, the heads clog... they are slow and the cost per page is high too. There is nothing more annoying than missing colours, white lines, etc. just when you need to print something important.
A low cost personal laser is a quite usable compromise, a Samsung M2026 (mono laser) is £54.89 on Amazon and can go years between prints without needing a new cartridge... it will churn out paper at around 20 pages per min too.0 -
I like my Brother HL-1212 laser printer, about £50 and it comes with a full toner cartridge.0

I have a Brother HL-1110 nice little prnter.
£45 from Amazon a couple of years ago.
Black cartridge not original was £12 I think.
As Norman Castle says the white cartridge lasts forever.

Brother HL2135W - I have one, although currently selling it as want colour laser. Never let me down.
Cheap genuine toner, can be refilled, or can by compatible toner for it for less than a tenner. Genuine can be had for £30 and is even available from Argos (although slightly more expensive)0 -
Brother HL-2250DN in 2014 for £70
I don't print very much but handy knowing the cartridge will last quite a long time if looked after well enough.0 -
Thanks for all the replies, given me food for thought

I bought a HP mono laser printer from Argos years ago. Used it (infrequently) for about 7 years on original toner. It was retired only because I've since bought a Colour Laser. Sat under the desk. It'd probably still print a few hundred pages if I plugged it in.
Best £39 I ever spent!0
