Beware of BT sim only

In 2015 I contacted BT to try to reduce my landline/broadband package charges. I was asked if I had a mobile, when I said yes, and that I had my own phone the BT rep said he would send me a sim card which I could activate when it arrived. When it did arrive, I read the blurb and realised that you can only have a contract with BT mobile, not PAYG. I use my mobile infrequently i.e. £10 will last me at least six months. I put the sim untouched still in its carrier card into a drawer. Last month I happened to check the detail of my BT online bill, to my horror I found I have been paying a monthly charge to them (for a sim card I had never activated) since 2015. I engaged in online chat with them and was then passed to customer services who said it was my fault, no they didn't want the sim card back. So BEWARE! BT do not make it clear the do not do Pay As You Go, and as soon as you have a sim card they'll be charging you for it even if you never make a call. At least £180 into BTs coffers for nothing and not a penny back!

So you rang to get the bill reduced and never checked subsequent bills?
That doesn't sound like BT's fault.
What was the outcome of the initial conversation?0 -
I have to say that I have a SIM-only contract with BT and am generally very happy with the deal. Yes, I pay a fixed monthly fee but I use the service and consider it good value.0

It's very clear what you're paying for and what you're getting in return0 -

How many other people take money from your account without you noticing?0 -
I have a BT sim only. When it arrived the paperwork clearly stated that unless it0

Try again.. i have a BT sim which had to be inserted to be activated. If not activated then the deal should have been cancelled. Maybe the situation eas different in 2015 however.
We had an unsavory experience with BT a few years ago when my wife who is not the account holder took a call from what turned out to be a third party seller. We ended up being switched from aol to BT for our home landline against our will. Despite many call to BT to cancel this arrangement it never was and we gave up.
Now we are still with BT but it ws our choice. They are such a large organisation that starting something with them is like pushing a boulder of a mountain - unstoppable.0
