Should Banks ask Security Questions?

I called up my bank today and noticed the advisor answered my question without asking any data protection, is this the norm now?

It depends on the nature of the question

If you asked 'is it wednesday?' im fairly confident they can get away without asking for any personal data.

If you asked how much is in my bank then they should be asking security questions.

    It depends upon the question.

If the question doesn’t require them to divulge any information about an account then there’s no need to ask any security questions. So something like “If I’m overdrawn for 7 days what would the charges be?” would be fine to answer.

If it does require that (“How much have I been charged for being overdrawn this month?”) then yes, they should.

It can also depend on whether your bank has voice recognition (some were trialling this) and also, if you rang from a known number.

I don’t think ringing from a known number would be sufficient. It could just as easily be a family member, friend, or someone who happened to find your mobile phone lying on the street.

It wouldnt by itself but with voice recognition and a recognised number, it goes towards building ID.

Ah, I read it as two separate examples of situations where it wouldn’t be required rather that the number being required in addition to the voice recognition.
