Ebay Item Not arrived but email from Royal Mail

After 3 weeks I reported a £3.50 item incl postage as not arrived and requested a refund.

Within a couple of hours I have a email from Royal Mail noreply@rmg-ebusiness.com essentially saying they left a card on 10th March and will retry on 23rd March.

If this is genuine that's fine, but does a seller normally have access to whether a card has been left by the postman?

I can't believe they sent it as signed for at £3.50 all in, but this email must have been generated by something the seller has done.

Yes, if you have the address and email which the seller does, you can go onto the redelivery site and request a redelivery however it doesn't actually tell you if there is an item there or not (haven't used it for about 12 months if it's changed)

I've used it because buyers are often adamant that they would have heard the postman knock or would have received a card, even though sellers know this simply isn't the case.

As above I often use this system and the next available date is always two days ahead so for today, the next available date would be the 23rd.

Surely the seller would need the card number which supposedly, but wasn't, put through my door to do that. Would also have to impersonate me online?

No the seller doesn't need the card, only your address.

Thanks, that's interesting. Can I as a private seller who paid £2.90 to send 2nd class do the same if the buyer reported not delivered?

I can only find this on the Royal Mail website which requires the non delivery card number.

Yes complete the details here https://www.royalmail.com/redelivery

The only bit you need to estimate when completing is the date a card was left, I input the date it should have arrived.

Thanks, yes I see now its only the name on the card not the number.

So the seller has to impersonate me to do that and does not know whether an undelivered package is being held or not.

I have an email from Royal Mail, would this only have been sent if there actually is an undelivered item or is the email sent as part of making the request whether or not there is any item to redeliver.

The latter - email sent on submission of the re-delivery form, regardless of whether an item is genuinely being held for you or not.

I see, so there probably is no package which will be delivered tomorrow this is something the seller has instigated to fool me.

I know my postman, he knows to leave parcels under the porch, there is a notice on the door which says leave under porch and there was no card so it will not surprise me if nothing turns up tomorrow.

I am surprised Royal Mail will allow any Tom D**k or Harry to do this.

Yes, but you may have a perfectly good seller who wants to trigger a redelivery. The reason is there are lots of buyers who can't be asked to go and check their delivery office and throw everything back to the seller. When ever the postmen run out of cards, they don't go back for more, they simply take the parcels back to the depot without putting anything through the door.
