Giving new contract phone away - EE
So I have looked on the web for answers to this but can't seem to find any!
My dad's contract is up and he has upgraded to the IPhone 7. He doesn't want a new phone as likes the size of his 5 so has told me that I can have it.
He thinks that when he gets it he can just keep his contract sim in his old phone and give me the new phone. He will then pay the contract every month but his contract sim will still be in his old phone.
The EE website states that you can't unlock a new phone for 6 months as they still technically own it.
So question is, if I get the phone unlocked in 6 months through EE will I be able to put my pay as you go sim in it and use the phone while my dad has his contract sim in his old phone?
Not sure if there is some thing where the new phones are registered to the contract etc. etc.
Any ideas would be great!
Thanks

Yes you can, although you know your dad is paying for the phone?
If you get a PAYG sim that works on the EE network (Asda, Plusnet for example) you can use it now without unlocking.
Plusnet is technically a contract rather than PAYG but they're rolling monthly and start at just £5.0 -
Thank you Colin_Maybe
Yes I know but I will pay him the difference separately every month.
If I did that would that not be against EE T&Cs? As in would it be flagged that a different sim was in the phone if I used it before 6 months?
Thanks for the advice!0 -
Would it not be cheaper to move your dad onto a sim only tarriff, and buy the iphone sim free? BEt that would save quite a few quid!0

As long as someones paying the contract EE couldn't give a monkeys what you do with the phone or sim card.0 -

Hello,
You can use your SIM in the phone once it's unlocked no problem, yes. As someone has mentioned above it would probably be a cheaper option to move your Dad to a SIM only plan and he can continue using his current phone.

Thanks all
Jenny_EE - Would I have to wait 6 months to unlock the phone?0 -
EE contracts specifically say the handset remains the property of EE. Mine also says that it must be used on EE during that period (it used to say with the account holders SIM). I don't know whether EE would enforce this.
Personally, I wouldn't risk it. I would get your dad on a SIM-only plan and you get a new phone SIM free at lower overall cost.0 -
Just use ebay to get it unlocked, plenty of sellers available.
(and no it wont relock when you update it and yes it is permanent):beer:0 -

Yep, for a Pay Monthly phone with EE you have had the device at least six months before we can unlock it. Thanks, Jenny“Official Company Representative
