Very small gas leak detected!

Engineer came out to service boiler and he detected a very small gas leak.

Apparently, it measure 2 and if you can't smell it and as long as it measures under 4 there is no issues.

What are these measurements?

He did look to be honest, but he said next step would mean possibly checking pipes in walls etc.

With no smell of gas and appliances connected a 2mb leak is acceptable.

But it is acceptable to have up to a 4mb drop on an existing system if there is no smell. If it goes over that then that is when you have to turn it off and start searching the house for the leak. No need to panic. If you smell gas you have a problem.

There will always be a gas leak. It may be very, very tiny, but there will always be a leak.

Don't panic, op, and no need to turn it all off. It is, nonetheless, sensible to try to track it down if you can.

Last year I had a drop of over 2mb accompanied by a gas smell. Having smelled gas I called out Transco and they measured the pressure drop, tested the boiler, hob and gas fire for a leak and concluded that I had a leak in the carcass, basically the pipe running between the meter and the boiler underneath the house. They turned off the gas and capped the supply until I was able to get a gas man round to install a new pipe around the outside of the house and cap off the old pipework.

Smell of gas makes all the difference, if smell is reported it!!!8217;s getting capped off, if no smell and appliances are connected a small leak is acceptable.
