...but that builtin satnavs should not be between your feet. I have posted pictures explaining the differences.
Let's remind ourselves of those pictures, shall we?

So, allowing for differences in viewing angles and framing of the pictures, let's look at the relative heights of the nav screen. One - the Merc - is impinging on the lower portion of the windscreen, slightly above the top of the wheel. Yet, on that car, the speedo is relatively low. Yet that's one of your good examples.

The BMW is around a similar height to the speedo, 2/3-3/4 of the way up the wheel.
The VW's is slightly below the speedo, around level with the centre of the wheel. Yet this is apparently so much worse. You don't even mention the godawful lack of clarity of the actual binnacle. !!!!!! is going on with the centre of the speedo? What IS all that guff? And why is there a picture of the car between the dials?

We have three cars where the main binnacle is in the upper half of the steering wheel. Obviously. Most are, unless they're in the centre of the dash.

You want an ergonomic dog's breakfast? There y'go. The dial in front of the driver is not the speedo - it's the tacho. The speedo is the outer ring of the large central dial. But you're fine with the height of the nav... It ticks all your boxes, right?

I bet the OP is one of these people that have a 6" tomtom right in the centre of their field of view on the windscreen where a family of 5 could dissapear behind.

As close as possible to the driver's line of sight, obviously!

Like I said, the first two examples below are better than the last one. I have also seen other cars where the inbuilt satnav is even farther below.
All 3 are still worse than simply keeping a phone in portrait mode at the bottom right of the windscreen, like most minicab drivers seem to do.

Do you think there is no difference, when it comes to distraction and safety, between the last one and the other two?

My wife's got a Mercedes C-Class, and that satnav screen drives me mad. It looks like they finished the car and then someone said "Oh, what about the screen?"

I drove it into a hole and we never managed to get it out. I think a tramp lives in it now.

Yet another one :( who confuses "bottom right" (no obstruction) with "right bang in the very middle" (stupid, dangerous obstruction). Those who confuse such basic concepts are dangerous drivers who shouldn't be allowed behind the wheel. Please, tell me, do you also have trouble distinguishing between left and right, top and bottom, red and green?

Also, has any one ever wondered why pilots use head up display to, gosh, display information on their line of sight without being distracted away from the sky ahead? We must tell the whole aviation world they have got it wrong because, you know, a bunch of keyboard warriors who fail to distinguish between "bottom right" and "right in the very middle" say so! :rotfl:

I was comparing the position of the inbuilt satnav alone, not commenting on the other displays.

The speedometers I find the most convenient and easy to read are those placed higher up, like in the Toyota Prius or Honda Civic.

You think pilots rely on their eyes to watch for obstructions when cruising at circa 500mph?

    :rotfl: indeed.
  • Obviously not only, Sherlock, but I still think they use their eyes - last time I checked Ray Charles' application to become a pilot was rejected.
