Electricity

Options
Hi
Wonder if you can help I have recently moved property in late Jan 2018 to a rural location that has electric supply only. We are on a Eco 20/20 meter and have received a electricity bill for 766.94!! from 27 Jan - 19th March. I have phoned EDF and disputed the bill the first reading was estimated, all they seem bothered about is moving the tariff!! We only have the heating on approx. 4 hours a day and weekends as we work fulltime. I have requested a meter to understand what is using the electric to no avail.

Has anyone else had this problem?

First off, did you send a meter reading when you first moved in to the property ?

Second, you say the bill is based on an estimated reading ? Send them an actual meter reading and ask them to re-calculate the bill if it's wildly different from the estimated reading.

Thirdly, what's using the electricity ? Are you making use of the off-peak rate to run storage heaters, or are you using peak-rate for heating ? Similarly, what about water heating ? I assume you have an immersion heater, is this using off-peak rates ?
  • Hi thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately I didn't take the readings however have taken readings from 2nd march and daily since. On speaking to the guy last week he was reviewing the previous occupiers bills and going to adjust them (still waiting).

We are trying to work out what is using the electric since moving in we have purchased new energy efficient washer/driers and only using after 9pm when the cheaper tariffs kick in, we have requested the assistance of EDF however at the moment resorting to doing it our self as all they are interested in is the money!!

We have normal radiators downstairs however upstairs are Eco Electric heaters that get to temp and auto close down and the rest of the heating is only on 4 hours a day which is the same as the water..

You may be better off on an E7 tariff but unless you check your meter frequently to see what is using it all and when you wont know which tariff is best for you..

As ES says, why have you got an estimate for your first meter reading - it should be the same as the one you gave them when you moved in and set up your account - if it isn't then you should be querying why.

Have you been sending in monthly meter readings and checking your on-line statement to ensure that the readings are being used - and making sure that they are corrected if they aren't.

You need to do your own checking and meter reading to ensure that bills are correct - do not accept estimated bills - get them sorted out.
