Sony DSCW830 Digital Camera-Low Memory?

Do all digital cameras require a memory card to store images? I assumed I would be able to have reasonable use of the camera without the extra financial investment of a memory card. I expected more than 3 pictures to be stored.
Turns out Internal memory is 27MB which seems to be related to 3 pictures worth of stored data. Both statements are listed separately on the leaflet inside box.
However, neither of these facts are displayed on the box. Neither is it made clear, a memory card is required despite being clearly expressed by Sony when I initially telephoned. SONY state I should have checked their website. However, searching full specification; I can see recording memory is 27MB, no reference to photo number. Nowhere does it state a memory card is required.
I am so disappointed. 27MB does not equip the product for minimal reasonable use. Can’t afford memory card yet. Is this the norm? What do I need to check for?
Is this all my digital incompetence or is there a genuine need for seller clarity here? I can’t be the only one who is confused and disappointed by this…can I?
I suggested to Sony that they could state that a memory card is required on the box. They didn’t feel that was necessary as they have a website.

You relied on your own assumption without even bothering to check, and now you are disappointed. Oh well; time to save up and buy a card of eBay, they are not that expensive.

Most digital cameras don't have any built in memory at all unless they are specifically marketed as high capacity built in storage, they are very few and far between.

A memory card can cost less than £5, just look on amazon or eBay. They are likely to be low quality/speed for that price but still better than no memory card at all until you can afford a better one.

Sorry to say I think it's your expectations that have left you disappointed.

I would say it's widely known that digital cameras need a memory card to capture images. Similarly 35mm cameras need film to capture images and you won't see that written on the box eithe

SD cards cost peanuts. Amazon show a 16GB card at an enormous £7.37. I'm packing for my holiday and some of my old cards are only 2GB and hold hundreds of pictures.

It's also got a rechargeable battery, so if you're going to be using it a lot you'll need a spare one of them too.

Lower the image quality and you will get more than 3 pictures.

Your lucky its got some internal memory, lots have no memory at all.

And avoid ebay for your memory otherwise you may end up with a fake one. You think wow this is cheap and when it says you have 100+ photos but can only find 20 or so because it had overwritten the first ones.

    Buy from a proper shop.

I would hazard these days that very few people use box art/information for buyer info.
What shop did you buy in?

That camera needs memory stick dou cards which are a tad more expensive, but an 8 gig card should provide plenty of storage for the sort of use this ca,era is likely to get.

I am surprised it has any internal memory, I have never had a digital camera with any.

es I would avoid Ebay for memory cards as there are many False and "mis-labelled" cards .
When you do get a card test it out in your laptop or other computer , this way you can make sure it has the correct capacity.
Truth is separate cameras are a dying line , as most e'body has a smartphone with camera , and the cameras on them are getting better and better. Why carry two , when you cam carry one?

Thanks for all the replies. OK I'm a numpty re digital cameras. I still think SONY should state the basic details for the numpties...even if I am the only one... I'm a photograph loving one.. ON THE BOX! AND CLEARLY ON THE WEBSITE! Assumptions that customers have specific digital camera knowledge is clearly incorrect. My assumptions about the camera were made due to the lack of clarity offered in my research. The person that bought the gift came to the same conclusions but based her assumption for reasonable memory capacity, as most mobile camera phones have large storage capacity despite good quality camera and video. We all have areas where our knowledge is meagre and other areas where we excel. This forum is such an aid and a pleasure when we respect each other.
