Thanks for all the replies. OK I'm a numpty re digital cameras. I still think SONY should state the basic details for the numpties...even if I am the only one... I'm a photograph loving one.. ON THE BOX! AND CLEARLY ON THE WEBSITE! Assumptions that customers have specific digital camera knowledge is clearly incorrect. My assumptions about the camera were made due to the lack of clarity offered in my research. The person that bought the gift came to the same conclusions but based her assumption for reasonable memory capacity, as most mobile camera phones have large storage capacity despite good quality camera and video. We all have areas where our knowledge is meagre and other areas where we excel. This forum is such an aid and a pleasure when we respect each other.

The reality is you have got more memory than most camera manufacturers supply these days.
Its one of these things thats just how it is nowadays Im afraid. cameras with memory are very rare.
It does benefit the purchaser in not paying for over priced memory. so there is a silver lining.

How much memory did you think there would be, ie how many pics did you want the camera to store before it was full.

would you then have moved those pics to an external storage, if so then buy a memory card that fits that amount on, bearing in mind a 16gb card will store over 3000 images at a relatively high resolution for around £8 a card.

dont forget a spare rechargeable battery if it uses rechargeable

I honestly can't remember the last time I bought a camera that had built in memory - all the ones I own need a card. To be honest its a better idea as you can carry multiple cards and aren't stuck by the limits of the camera. And if you can get 3 pics out of 27mb then you aren't running at a very high res - mine would use that for one pic especially running raw!
