Suzuki Grand Vitara - driveshaft and Bearings cost

Hi I brought a Grand Vitara and after a recent service I have been told that its missing its nearside DriveShaft and that the nearside bearings have slight play. I've got a couple of 4x4s and I can't see how just selecting 4x4 would make the absence of a front driveshaft obvious.
