I'm trying to identify a classic film that I half-watched several years ago. (Came in from the pub, saw a bit, fell asleep, don't remember much!)

I've searched for everything I know about the film and come up with nothing. It's as if it doesn't exist!

Some of these memories are probably wrong, but I'm hoping that someone can put it all together and figure out what I was watching! :o

- It was a a drama set in rural England
- during the time when people had just started fighting duels with pistols
- was a long film (2+ hours)
- starred Eddie Marsan as the main character
- featured John Cleese in a very brief cameo role
- heavily featured Beethoven's 7th Symphony as background music

And it was a film that I'd imagine to be vaguely mainstream... not something really obscure...

Any ideas?! It's driving me crazy!

I'm struggling to accept that Eddie Marsan ever played a major role in a "classic" film, since he was only born in 1968!

Regardless, your own link to his Wikipedia page:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eddie_Marsan
lists every film he's ever appeared in. So it must be one of them?

Sorry I can't help further. This is the TV Moneysaving board.

There's a big section on MovieMistakes.com where you can post things like this and somebody on there will probably recognise the film. Some have identified films from less details than you've posted here!

Cheers both. The film isn't on the wiki page (as far as I can tell). It's almost as if the film doesn't exist and I dreamt it! Or... more likely... some of the facts that I "remember" are completely wrong. :-/

I'll check out MovieMistakes to see if anyone there knows what I'm going on about!
  • Possibly check through John Cleeses Wiki to see the one which matches Marsan

If you really mean Eddie Marsan, then the number of productions in which he was the main character must be fairly small. His career to date has been mainly in playing supporting roles (albeit very well). My favourite, probably the noxious driving instructor in Happy Go Lucky.

I vaguely remember an Eddie Marsan film where his character was a historical re-enactor. The re-enactment revolved around a castle (as opposed to a battlefield). I believe the plot revolved around him getting his woman back who had left him due the amount of time he spent on his hobby. He was the lead in this film.
Ok, I looked it up and it could be Faintheart.

No Cleese in the cast according to IMDB.

    Does that help?

Thanks all. It wasn't Faintheart, and I haven't found anything linked to John Cleese (although he had a very minor role).

I think I must be wrong in thinking it was Eddie Marsan. Hmmm... :-/

I know what you're experiencing. For years I kept coming back to memories of a TV series that I watched as a child (about a Genie living in a watering can in a hardware shop). No one I ever mentioned it to had ever heard of it, and then thanks to Google I found it.

If you'd like me to move the thread to Discussion Time, where more people will see it, please let me know. Unfortunately, MSE doesn't have a dedicated Films sub-forum.

Aha! I've got it! (I think.)

The film was Barry Lyndon, and Eddie Marsan wasn't in it. Oh -- and maybe it was Leonard Rossiter rather than John Cleese...? Both funny guys, but... I'm starting to worry about my memory!

I'm going to see if I can rent a copy to be sure, but I think that's the one!

    Thanks again, everyone!
