strictly speaking hdmi does not support sound from pc to screen, You do get modified cables which have a jackplug so that they can be pluged in your laptops headphone socket - ebay
OP needs to right or left click on the little speaker at the bottom right of the computer screen, just to select the HDMI output for sound. It *should* switch back automatically when he unplugs.0 -
Wrong. You're confused, you're thinking of VGA cables, and DVI too. HDMI does carry sound, including surround sound.

Update:
You are correct. I have now followed this advice and it does allow you to select the TV as the sound output as long as the lead is connected.
