Wrong. You're confused, you're thinking of VGA cables, and DVI too. HDMI does carry sound, including surround sound.strictly speaking hdmi does not support sound from pc to screen, You do get modified cables which have a jackplug so that they can be pluged in your laptops headphone socket - ebay
OP needs to right or left click on the little speaker at the bottom right of the computer screen, just to select the HDMI output for sound. It *should* switch back automatically when he unplugs.0 -

Update:
You are correct. I have now followed this advice and it does allow you to select the TV as the sound output as long as the lead is connected.
