Not sure if I am on the right board but could someone please advise me if all tripods are universal in size. I want one to use with my Olympus E500DSLR

I got one from Asda for £7 and it fits two cameras we have one is a DSLR, they also have a slightly larger one for £10. I think Tesco's sell them too0

I had a small one from Asda for a quid which fits my digital SLR a treat - it is small mind you. I think that you can buy them from 7dayshop.com as they sell decent camera stuff. I think that tripods are universal as I have one from my old SLR camera which fits my digital jobby.0

Take a look at the Manfrotto range:

You've got a nice camera, make sure you get a decent tripod that won't topple over with your pride and joy!
The screw fitment is standard, only the size and weight of the tripods will differ - generally the more you spend, the more substantial the tripod.
Perhaps look at one with a quick release plate - you attach the plate to your camera, and then the plate clips to the tripod head - saves having to screw and unscrew all the time if you're swopping between the tripod and hand held a lot.
If you want to take macros, look for one where the legs will splay, to allow you to get closer to the ground.
Look at the tripod's maximum height - if you are tall you don't want to be stooping all the time to look through the viewfinder.Charlie0 -

They also do monopods, which can be very handy when you don't want to lug a full tripod about0 -
Totally agree with F1Charlie, get a Manfrotto if you can budget for the price.
I have a Canon 10D and use a Manfrotto 190XPROB tripod with a 322 RC head, it cost a bit but is worth it to support my DSLR and lenses.
There is no way I would put an expensive DSLR on a cheap tripod, the build quality and strength would not be there.
Your camera cost a lot of money so look after it.0 -
I'd be interested in an ultra-light tripod for taking on trips. Don't mean the pocket ones but full height. Do any exist yet?0

How about the Velbon Ultra range:

I got a small tripod with telescopic legs from jessops about 18 months ago. I use it for my D40 and it folds down to 7 inches in length and is 36 when extended.0 -
Manfrotto it is then. My son has one he informs me so I am going to borrow it for my forthcoming trip to my homeland of Northumberland. Hope to get some good pics. Will perhaps ask for one for Xmas from Santa

I already have an old steel tripod, it's height extended is 3 feet and weight 500g, quite compact. What I am looking for now is one that is at least 4.5 feet and also no more than 500g - one thing that's changed is that cameras are nowadays smaller & lighter so can't tripods follow suit?0
