    COMET

They will not accept the return of goods in any way. Even if it was an item you were misadvised on, in full and perfect packaging.

They offer NO refund, NO exchange under any circumstances. They will insult you though. When I suggested they ask the salesperson concerned what she had told us, they said they had already asked her, (although how they knew which one to ask, beat me) and that I was a liar.

It makes no difference to them whether you have a receipt or not, in my case I had the receipt for the item purchased the afternoon before. When I rang the 'helpline' on the afternoon I purchased the item, they put the phone down when I suggested they appeared to have mis-sold the item.

I am not an employee of Comet

Despite their adverts telling you the staff know all about the products they sell, they don't. We asked 3 different sales people in the store and it was only the 3rd who seemed to know what she was talking about. Unfortunately she was just guessing.

Curry's, so we are told, are no better.

Can you return goods without a problem? Ie you bought it and changed your mind... is this allowed: Yes, But there are exceptions on Duvets/quilts, bed protection including electric blankets and memory foam, pillows, (all due to health and hygine reasons) made to measure items and cut length nets, curtains if gathered, any item which has been used (of course if any item is faulty we'll take it back). items can be taken back to any store in the company

Does it offer a full refund or credit note? full refund or exchange only no credit notes or vouchers

Did you need to have your receipt/a copy of the credit-card statement? Need to reciept, but if you have lost the reciept and have paid by card and this is shown on your statement the stores can look through the electronic journal to pinpoint the sale and check the items (BUT this will take a few days and depends on the manager not all branches will do this and it has to be the store you brought it from)

Is there any time limit? Is it seasonal?
28 DAYS (around christmas (mid nov) some stores will write on the the reciept christmas present and will tell the customer that the item can be brought back until the end of jan (but again this is a store level decision)

Are you a customer or employee/former employee? Employee
  • Comet refused to exchange a faulty monitor that I bought last week, I wasnt even asking for a refund I simply wanted a monitor with all the pixels working ! not much to ask for a brand new piece of equipment I thought. Also a range cooker I bought from them 2 years ago caught fire , when we rang comet we were told to ring Delonghi who then told us that Comet actually make the cookers and pay Delonghi to use their name  We shall avoid them like the plague in future ..

re Comet not doing an exchange: is this not against the law? I would give trading standards a ring to see what they could do.

LCD's might be a different kettle of fish, having a few dead or stuck pixels doesn't mean it's 'faulty' as such and a lot of manufacturers won't replace for that reason.

Not sure where it lies in terms of the law.

We've had a load of problems with Comet.
Bought a Dyson washing machine from them. Most of my cars have cost less than we paid for this beast.
They didn't follow Dyson's instructions when delivering it (they removed restraining bolt before unloading it and clonking it up our front step) and damaged it internally in the process.
All in all took about 20 phone calls and a few letters to get it sorted. Dyson were a great help (even though not being at fault). Comet were completely unhelpful. Got some compensation from Comet, but will try not to buy from them again. We now refer to them as ****ing Comet!

The washing machine, by the way, is wonderful.

Bought some raw meat from Tescos. Kept it in sealed packet in fridge until needed. When we came to use it it was off. Weren't going to Tescos for a few days and obviously didn't want the off meat around the house so threw the meat out and kept the packet. Took the packet back. They refused a refund as they didn't have the original meat. Did they really expect us to keep dodgy meat around the house for days? Did they really want it back in their store (after being open for a few days when it was already off)?.
I can understand them not refunding if they haven't got the proof in front of them. If this happens again, phone the store on the day the meat goes off and say you'll be coming in later in the week. (Customer Service adviced me to do this once.)

I quite enjoy taking manky meat back to them. Once took a rotten chicken back to a Tesco Express that stunk out the whole checkout area and nearly had the manageress vomiting.:rotfl:

  • I've recently been the recipient of money from Tesco on two occasions. On checking my receipt I discovered in the first case that I had been charged full price for a buy 2 for £6.00 on vitamins. I took my receipt back to the store and was given a full cash refund plus both packs of vitamins free!

On the second occasion I discovered I had been charged twice for a box of Bran Flakes, I went back and the same thing happened, I got the Bran Flakes plus my money back.

Both times I received cash even though I had paid with my debit card.

I knew about this some years ago but thought they had stopped doing it as they keep it very quiet.

I have been told by someone who worked for Tesco that if you ask nicely they will do this, if you are nasty to them they only give you the difference in the price.

1.your first point- would never be a concern to the company-They have got a piece of perfect stock back worth £30-there is no loss involved.
It would indeed concern a retailer. To repeat what jada said: You buy an item for a fiver on eBay and bring it to a bricks and mortar retailer for a refund for £30. You believe the retailer can't lose as they can sell the item on for £30. This assumption is wrong because a) it costs the retailer money to actually process your refund so they lose money immediately and b) the retailer pays only £15 (for example) to their supplier for your £30 item, so if the retailer reduces the item the day after you bring it back and it goes back on the shelf to say, £20, then assuming it sells they will lose a further £10 as they didn't buy the item from their regular supplier for £15, they bought it from you for full retail at £30!!

It's more complicated from our side and as a store manager I assure you inventory loss is one of the primary metrics used in our appraisals...and hence salary! We must assess the effect of a policy or use of discretion on our potential loss and act accordingly. Refunds given to customers who bought an item which has since been reduced are a major cause of inventory loss.

Lidl Ireland (and I presume UK) has a very open ended refunds policy. If you change your mind and bring back any item with a receipt you are guaranteed a full refund within 28 days (except on certain TARGA electronics-LCD TVs and Laptops, only a handful of times a year you'll see these products in store) however if you bring back said item at any time the store manager is generally going to give you a full refund. If the item is faulty you will of course get a full refund after the 28 days regardless. Lidl encourages store managers to use discretion as much as possible as a discount retailer customers must know they can bring items back without hassle. This is done to build customer confidence. If a discount retailer had a very restrictive policy then customers would believe the stock was cheaper because it was rubbish.

Lidl Ireland will give exchange or refunds on perishable items even if the customer has disposed of the offending bit of stinky cheese or whatever! Lidl also has a policy that if you bring back a yogurt (or any item <€5) from another retailer (especially Aldi) they will politely explain the product is not their's bit will give the customer a free sample of the Lidl version. Again, to build customer confidence. This happens very often actually. I had Tesco bread brought in to me last week!

Asda has a good returns policy on

    :j practically everything.:T

    UNLESS you are returning clothes!
    George Refunds SUCK!
    (I work for them)
There is no set policy for refunds within asda house- no one is quite sure whether you are allowed 28 days or more, so different colleagues get confused. Some people will go blue in the face refusing you a refund (ok- i have done that before, but i know the people who steal, and come back "without their reciept"
If you have your recipet and any one ever refuses you a refund, just call asda house- and they will normally authorise it, as they want to keep your custom!
( I do indeed hate people doing this, but as you are all so lovely, I thought i'd let you know!) Just don't come to me! hehe
