Accidental overpayment M&S credit card

Hi

I paid off my credit card balance around the same time that a direct debit payment was then made so my account is ~£100 in credit. I checked the forums for past examples and advice was to contact the card issuer (M&S) and request a refund.

I did that and they said I would have to ask my bank for a direct debit indemnity claim. My bank says they made no error.

I've contacted M&S again and said I want the credit balance returned via cheque and for the account to be closed.

Any advice? Am I doing this correctly?

Yes. M&S need to send you the cash.

Why not just spend £100 on your credit card?

Many CC will take the DD irrespective of payments made on the account in the interim, some take payments into account. Many banks will refund by bank transfers but some still only do it by a cheque refund. If you don't need to close immediately, spending the £100 would be the easiest.

If you're not looking to spend the £100 credit to bring the balance to £0.00 M&S Cards should have a very standard CBR (Credit Balance Refund) process in place to send this back via. FPS Bank Transfer or Cheque for example.

This should not be a process that is delayed, or have any confusion. It's very standard.

Ok, thanks for the responses, I will get back to M&S in that case and quote that at them! They seemed to be blaming my bank entirely, my bank is blaming them

Neither your bank or M&S are at fault. You are. If you read the T&Cs of the M$S account they will no doubt explain what happens to your DD when you also make a manual payment (it varies by card so I can't say exactly, but they will no doubt have followed that process).

Unless you already wanted to close the account, you have no need to do so now just to get your cash back. You can either just spend it on the M&S card or ask them to refund the positive balance.

How do you know this to be the case? Do you work for M&S Cards? Or are you just making this up? Or a spammer in the making?

That's quite a pessimistic view you have for me based on a standard response from me.

I've probably arranged more than 500 CBR (Credit Balance Refunds), and the process for most companies is industry-wide. The moment you go into a credit value on the card is then your money that we owe you. You are correct though - I don't work for M&S but I can tell you with having taken well over 15,000 calls relating to Credit Cards M&S will definitely have a process to get stevetuk money back to him - through FPS/ Cheque or any way you can think off.

After-all, they are a bank right?

They can refund your credit balance without having to close your account.
